Sevy Dominant as Yankees beat Detroit in Game One of Doubleheader

After postponement number seven of the season, the Yanks found themselves with an unexpected break on Sunday before having to play a doubleheader on Monday in Detroit against the Tigers, and game one went just about as well as you can ask if you are the Yanks. The Yankees ace Luis Severino gave the squad eight strong innings, minimizing the bullpen usage, as the bats exploded in the fourth inning to secure a 7-4 victory.

The first inning saw the Tigers get their only earned run against Severino, as Miguel Cabrera drove a double down the line to plate the first run of the game. Detroit would not find much more success against Sevy, compiling two of their four hits off him in the first. The Yanks did not respond immediately, yet when they did it was in a major way. The offensive barrage started in the third, as Gleyber Torres drove his tenth homer to the right field seats to tie it up.

The fourth inning was one to remember to say the least, as the Yanks lineup batted around and then some, sending eleven hitters to the plate, terrorizing Detorit starter Drew VerHagen in the process. It all started with a moonshot from Greg Bird that left the yard, his second of the season, and only the beginning of what would be a long inning. The young bats of Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar each added RBI hits in the inning to stretch the score to 4-1. Next to join the fun was the hottest hitter on the Yankees: Austin Romine. Romine went deep to center for a three-run shot to give the Yanks their final runs of the game. This home run also marked the debut of another incredible John Sterling home run call: Romie: You’re my homie!

During the day game of a doubleheader, it is always nice to get some mileage from your starter, and Severino did exactly that today, having one of his best starts of the season. The ten strikeouts over eight innings with only one earned run is spectacular, but the most impressive part of his day was the fact that he did not surrender a walk, just a hit batter on a breaking ball off the foot.Severino also had a great moment as a leader in this game. Sevy's unearned run came off a Gleyber error, which Torres was clearly frustrated about after the inning. Instead of getting on him, Severino went to Gleyber to let him know it was all good and to not worry about it: an awesome moment to see two guys at that age both growing before our eyes.

Severino wound up throwing 112 pitches, coming back out for the eighth and proceeding to throw 18 pitches in the inning. Jonathan Holder came on in the ninth to try and finish things out, but didn’t exactly get help from his defense, as Romine dropped an easy pop up behind the plate, and to add insult to injury: nobody was covering first base! The Tigers would score two runs in the ninth, forcing Aroldis Chapman to come in to get the final out of the game, as the Yanks took the front end of the doubleheader.

Looking Ahead: 
We will not have to wait long for the next game, as the second game of the doubleheader starts at 7:10 PM ET,  with Domingo German on the hill. Gary Sanchez will be behind the plate after getting the day game off, and expect to see Brett Gardner in the lineup as well.
