Yankees to promote Jonathan Loaisiga to start on Friday vs. Tampa Bay

The New York Yankees, having recently lost both Jordan Montgomery for the season to Tommy John Surgery and Masahiro Tanaka for a few weeks due to cramps in both of his hamstrings, are set to call up electric right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga to make his Major League debut on Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, per YES Network's Jack Curry.

*Per Boone's update after last night's game, Loaisiga will start Friday night, not Thursday night*

Loaisiga, New York's 12th best prospect per MLB[dot]com, had an impressive showing in A-ball before a quick promotion to double-A Trenton where he made his last six starts.  Over ten starts across both levels of the minors this season, Loaisiga is 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA, a 1.130 WHIP and an impressive 56 strikeouts in just 45.0 innings pitched.  He has also walked just four (!) hitters over that span.

The Yankees were so impressed with Loaisiga in 2017 that they added him to the 40-man roster ahead of this past winter's Rule 5 Draft, fearing he would be selected by another team if unprotected.  Loaisiga is just 23 years old, but has been in the Yankees' system since 2016.  His best pitch is a mid-to-high-90s fastball and he complements that with a strong changeup and curveball.  

 While many fans were clamoring for the Yankees to perhaps turn to top pitching prospects Justus Sheffield or Chance Adams, neither are on the current 40-man roster and the Yankees would like to bring either (or both) up once they are ready to contribute full-time.  Loaisiga, on the other hand, will likely only be here until Tanaka is ready to return or the Yankees make a trade for another starter – whichever comes first.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
