Homers by Gardner, Stanton power the Yankees past deGrom and the Mets
The Yankees did not have to travel far for this road series against their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets. Masahiro Tanaka faced off against Jacob deGrom, who is having a fantastic season for the Mets thus far. Entering tonight, he led the National League with a 1.49 ERA. However, deGrom could not secure the win for his team tonight due to stellar pitching from the Yankees’ staff and a go-ahead home run by Brett Gardner.

deGrom swiftly retired Gardner to start the game but delivered a walk to the next batter, Aaron Judge. A 3-5 double play hit by Greg Bird ended the Yankees’ chance at scoring in the first, and Judge jammed his hand sliding into second. However, he stayed in the game and appears to be fine. The Mets scored early with a 397-foot leadoff home run from Brandon Nimmo on Masahiro Tanaka’s second pitch. Tanaka has now given up a home run in six straight starts. He quickly rebounded with three strikeouts to end the inning.
Batting eighth in the order, Masahiro Tanaka made solid contact, lining out to Michael Conforto. deGrom brought his usual stuff to the game tonight, not allowing a hit through three innings. Aside from the leadoff homer, Tanaka looked sharp with six strikeouts at the end of the third frame. Tonight’s game quickly shaped into a pitcher’s duel.
Gardner led off the next inning with a single ripped into right center. Judge spoiled the hit by grounding into the Yankees’ second double play of the night, and Bird struck out swinging on four pitches. The offense continued to make deGrom’s job look far too easy.
Tanaka reached first base on an error by Adrian Gonzalez. With one out, Gleyber Torres singled to center, followed by a walk to Gardner. Judge made the Mets pay for their mistakes with a sacrifice fly that scored Tanaka. The Yankees took what they could get from deGrom, tying the game at one.
Jonathan Holder came into relieve an injured Tanaka after five impressive innings and just 75 pitches. Tanaka felt stiffness in both of his hamstrings…it’s not what you want. The debate for a designated hitter in the NL immediately became reignited after Tanaka left the game.

In the top of the eighth, Aaron Hicks pinch-hit for Green and struck out looking, giving deGrom his seventh K of the night. With two outs, in came Brett Gardner to save the day. He launched a clutch two-run homer to right, giving the Bombers a 3-1 lead late in the game.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Giancarlo Stanton extended the Yankees’ lead with a barely-fair home run to left field. Aroldis Chapman entered for the save with a three-run lead.
Chapman hit Nimmo and allowed a single to Asdrubal Cabrera. With one out, Miguel Andújar made a fantastic grab to add an out and prevent a run. Jay Bruce made the final out, a fly ball to Judge. The Yankees take game one of the Subway Series, and the Mets lose their seventh straight game.

What’s next?
Domingo Germán will make his sixth start of the season for the Yankees in game two of this series in Queens. Germán, who replaced Jordan Montgomery in the starting rotation due to injury, has a 5.44 ERA in 2018. For the Mets, LHP Steven Matz takes the mound. In 11 starts this season, Matz is 2-4 with an ERA of 3.42. Tomorrow’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 PM EST. Tune in to watch on FOX.
