Yankees offensive woes continue as they drop second straight game 4-0

The day did not start off well for Sonny Gray, as a leadoff single from Kevin Kiermaier started his outing. Then, DH Jake Bowers laced a double down the left field line, scoring the Rays center fielder. In the bottom of the 2nd, CJ Cron hit another double, breaking an 0-16 slump. Then, Daniel Robertson doubled him home. After a Mallex Smith sacrifice bunt moved Robertson to third, Willy Adames hit a grounder through the left side for another base hit to make it 3-0. Meanwhile, the Yankees wasted a pair of leadoff doubles off of Rays starter Wilmer Font in their first two innings at the plate. Giancarlo Stanton laced one down the right-field line, but was stranded, and Austin Romine smoked a ball off the wall in center before also being left on base.

Both pitchers settled down, and Font exited in the 6th inning after a walk to Judge with 80 pitches and the Yankees still having failed to plate a runner. Jonny Venters entered, and Didi Gregorius hit an infield single to set the Yanks up with first and third and two outs. Rays manager Kevin Cash turned to Ryne Stanek to face Stanton. Stanton struck out and the Rays escaped. The Yankees offense was again anemic in this game, and their numbers with runners in scoring position in this series are ugly. As a team, they were just 2 for 17, "good" for a .118 average. This vaunted offense has now scored just one run in the last two games.

Gray had retired 15 straight until Willy Adames hit a solo homer to make it 4-0 Tampa Bay, knocking Gray out of the game. Chasen Shreve entered in relief, and his struggles continued. Shreve walked Kevin Kiermaier, and gave up a single to Matt Duffy to give the Rays runners on first and third with two outs. Bowers then walked, and the bases were loaded for Wilson Ramos. Shreve struck out Ramos and escaped without surrendering a run. Chaz Roe entered for the Rays in the 8th and worked a 1-2-3 inning. Chad Green worked a scoreless bottom of the 8th despite giving up a couple of hits, but Rays closer Sergio Romo shut the door in the 9th to secure the shutout victory for Tampa Bay.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow at 1:10 PM ET as Domingo German will oppose the third straight Rays’ opener to face the Yankees in Ryne Stanek.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
