Severino dominates again, Yankees win 4-1

Seeking their third straight win and yet another series win, the Yankees sent their ace out to the mound this afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Sevy was dominant again in this one, going eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while adding nine strikeouts.  His eight scoreless frames lowered his season ERA to 2.09, second best in the AL behind only Justin Verlander.

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI double from rookie phenom Gleyber Torres and added their second run when Didi Gregorius drove in Aaron Judge, who had led off the inning with a double, in the bottom of the third with a single.  The Yankees eventually loaded the bases in the third and threated to bust the game open early but would not add another run in the frame.

Back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth from Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez concluded the scoring for the Yankees in this one, but the four runs were all they'd need behind the dominant Severino.  Chasen Shreve came in to pitch the ninth and had absolutely nothing working, surrendering a lead-off HR to Matt Duffy and then a triple to Jake Bauers. Aroldis Chapman was called on to lock the game down, and he did just that, recording his 20th save, retiring the three batters he faced in order.  With the win, New York improves to 46-20 and Tampa Bay falls to 32-38.

Winning Pitcher: Luis Severino (10-2, 2.09): 8.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 9 K
Losing Pitcher: Ryan Yarbrough (5-3, 4.21): 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 4 R, 4 K, 2 HR
Save: Aroldis Chapman (20)

What's Next:
The Yankees will look to sweep this four-game set tomorrow before heading to Washington on Monday to complete the two-game series that was rained out last month.  CC Sabathia will get the ball for New York and the Rays will go with another bullpen day, with the "Opener" still to be announced.  First pitch is at 2:05 following the Old Timer's Day festivities.
