Lugo, Frazier lift Mets past Yankees 2-0 to avoid sweep

On Sunday Night Baseball, Seth Lugo and the Mets outdueled Luis Severino and the Yankees to win 2-0 and avoid a series sweep at Citi Field. The Yankees offense could muster only three hits on the night as they fell to 42-19 on the season.

The game began with Lugo and Severino firing up zero after zero until Severino ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. After allowing a two-out single to .149 hitting Jose Reyes, Severino hung a 1-2 slider that Todd Frazier clubbed to left-center for his seventh home run of the season. This would be all the offense needed for the Mets to end their eight-game losing streak. Severino departed after five and the Yankees bullpen of Shreve, Warren and Holder held the Mets scoreless, but it didn’t matter as the Yankees were shutout for the first time all season.

The Yanks did threaten once, in the eighth. Miguel Andujar, who had two of New York’s three hits tonight, delivered a one-out single, which brought pinch-hitter Aaron Judge to the plate as the tying run. Anti-climatically, Judge hit a ground ball to short that looked like a possible double play off the bat. Instead, in what felt like a game-changing moment, Jose Reyes committed two errors on the same play and everyone was safe. However, Gleyber Torres and Brett Gardner both flew out and the threat was subsided. There was some potential in the ninth as well, but Greg Bird was doubled off at first to end the game after Todd Frazier snared a line drive off the bat of Gary Sanchez that had double written all over it.

What’s Next?

The Yankees will enjoy an off day tomorrow before hosting the first-place Washington Nationals on Tuesday and Wednesday. The probable starters for Tuesday are CC Sabathia (3-1, 3.59 ERA) for the Bombers and Tanner Roark (3-6, 3.56 ERA) for the Nats. First pitch is at 7:05pm on WPIX.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
