Another clutch hit by Gleyber Torres powers Yankees to win over Rays in series opener
Coming off a two-game
split with a tough Washington Nationals team, the Yankees sent Domingo German
to the hill Thursday evening to kick off a four game weekend series against the
Tampa Bay Rays. After striking out nine batters in his last outing against the New
York Mets, German brought his strikeout stuff with him to the stadium tonight. As
has been customary for German so far this year, he gave up an early run on a
first inning homer by Matt Duffy but settled down after that. German has put together a string of good starts and he seems to be
settling into the rotation nicely. Thanks to some timely offense, he earned his
first win of the season tonight. Domingo completed six innings for the third straight outing and allowed three runs while striking out 10. His stuff was so good in fact, that he generated a ridiculous 26 swinging strikes in just six innings. Tonight was a good night for Domingo.

The score remained 1-0
Rays until the top of the third when Johnny Field walked and eventually
came around to score on a single by Wilson Ramos to make the score 2-0. While
the Rays got some early hits off German, Rays starter Blake Snell held the
Yankees in check for the first half of this game. Snell has been tough this
year and the Yankees didn’t break through against him until the bottom of the
fifth inning. It started with one man out, when Aaron Hicks launched a solo
homer into the right field seats. An Aaron Judge single and a Gary Sanchez walk
followed. That brought up Gleyber Torres who continued his incredible clutch
hitting, crushing a three-run home run into the left field seats to give the
Yankees a 4-2 lead.

The Rays would get one
back in the top of the sixth when Jake Bauers singled and came around to score
on a single by Joey Wendle to make the score 4-3. That would turn out to be the
final score of this ball game as the Yankees used a combination of Chad Green,
Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman to lock down the victory.
What’s
Next?
The Yankees and the Rays
will continue this series tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium with first pitch
coming at 7:05 pm on WPIX. The probable starters will be familiar face Nathan
Eovaldi (1-1, 3.94 ERA) for the Rays and Jonathan Loaisiga, making his major league debut for the Yankees.
