Should the Yankees pursue Jhonny Peralta?

The corner infield has been an epidemic for the Yankees this season. First and third base are known to be positions that are played by players with solid bats and that has not been the case for the Bombers this season. Outside of Headley’s miraculously solid April, he has been awful yet again this season with the bat, and everyone is aware of the wrong doings of Chris Carter at first base. Luckily, first base help is on the way with Tyler Austin being activated off the DL yesterday, and Greg Bird getting closer to returning. Third base is still an issue, however. The St. Louis Cardinals recently announced via MLB Trade Rumors that the Cardinals plan on parting ways with their long-time infielder Jhonny Peralta, after Kolten Wong returns from the disabled list. The question remains should the Yankees pursue Peralta?

Peralta has had an overall solid offensive career as he is approaching 2,000 hits and has slugged 202 home runs splitting time at third base and short stop. He was an All-Star as recent as 2015, but his results since then have been very lackluster. Injuries have limited him to only 102 games over the past two seasons and, while he did hit 260 last season, he is currently hitting an atrocious .189 with a .434 OPS. On top of that he has refused to take grounders at first base to increase his versatility for St. Louis. Peralta also carries some baggage with him as he was suspended for PEDs back in 2013.

After hearing how bad off the Cardinals currently are with Peralta, it should make Yankee fans rejoice that Chase Headley is currently occupying the hot corner for them and not a guy like Peralta. The aforementioned Cardinals will likely not have Peralta on their roster for much longer, however, which means that they will have to eat his contract and then designate him for assignment. They should not be asking much for him and there may be a small market for Peralta, despite his poor play as of late. The Yankees should not be one of those teams that are interested in Peralta.

While there is a chance he could rediscover his power stroke with the Bombers and provide another veteran in the dugout, he is not worth the cash considerations and 40-man roster spot that would be all the Yankees would, in all honesty, have to give up for Peralta. Some could claim he could be a temporary stop gap for Gleyber Torres, and that the Yankees could easily dump Peralta when Torres is called up. However, this would not be fair to guys like Ronald Torreyes and Tyler Wade who have been producing for the organization this season and would outplay Peralta anyways. Headley has been dismal of late, but the Yankees will not regulate him to bench duties unless an internal player is given the majority of at-bats. If the Yankees had to choose between Peralta and Headley, they would pick Headley every single time. Headley is a team player and is willing to almost anything to help the team. He knows he is struggling, and unlike Peralta he would definitely take grounders at first if it meant keeping his spot on the Bombers.
