Aaron Hicks going to DL with oblique injury, expected to miss 3-4 weeks
Yankees outfielder
Aaron Hicks left today’s game against the Texas Rangers after four innings and
it was announced after the game that he would be going on the DL with an injury
to his oblique. Hicks told reporters after the game that he was given a
timetable to return of about 3-4 weeks.
Thankfully this injury
has nothing to do with the Achilles injury Hicks suffered a few weeks back, but
oblique injuries can be tricky so this is definitely still cause for concern.
Even with Jacoby Ellsbury out on a rehab assignment, it is unclear if the
Yankees feel he is ready to return. Joe Girardi told reporters it is possible
that we could see Ellsbury tomorrow but if he isn’t ready the team may be in a tough
spot. They have both Clint Frazier and Dustin Fowler performing well in Triple
A but neither are on the 40 man roster. If Ellsbury isn't ready to join the team tomorrow then they may be forced to go with a short handed bench for a few days.
Losing Hicks at this
point in the season definitely hurts. Hicks was putting together a bounce back
season after a tough 2016 campaign. For the 2017 season he is batting .290 with
10 home runs and 37 RBI. He has been frequently placed in the number two slot
in the lineup behind Brett Gardner and has been in center field every day since
the injury to Ellsbury. With the Yankees’ going through their toughest stretch
of the season to date, Hicks’ injury could not come at a worse time.
