Yankee comeback falls short after dreadful Pineda start
The New York Yankees drop their second straight series at Yankee Stadium, losing the rubber game to the Texas Rangers by a final score 7-6. Another poor pitching performance by Michael Pineda put the home team in a hole early that, despite their best efforts, they couldn't crawl out from.
The Yankees needed a strong start from Pineda but they got the exact opposite. His fastball stood up in the zone and his ability to hit the corners was nearly non-existent. The problems started in the first inning when Elvis Andrus singled to left, scoring Delino DeShields. Adrian Beltre would follow it up with a two-run home run to put the Rangers ahead 3-0. One inning later, Pineda would repeat his mistakes, leaving a ball up over the plate for Shin-Soo Choo who put it in the upper deck in right field. Before the Yankees could blink they were down 6-0.
Despite the large deficit New York would rally in the fifth inning with four runs. Aaron Judge led the charge with a single, scoring right fielder Mason Williams. Then, in a long battle with starting pitcher Nick Martinez, Gary Sanchez would take a 3-2 pitch deep to center field for a three-run home run. A game which felt out of reach suddenly felt reachable.
The Yankees would continue to chip away, scoring two more runs in the seventh inning. Ronald Torreyes hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and then Didi Gregorius singled to score Judge. The inning could have bore even more runs but Sanchez was tagged out trying to go from first to third base. The team would waste another opportunity in the eight inning, failing to bring home Chase Headley who doubled to kick off the frame.
There were some bright spots for the Yankees, especially from the bullpen. Tyler Webb, Chad Green, Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman combined for five scoreless innings. They held the Rangers at bay, giving the Yankees their best opportunity to tie the game.
The Rangers take two out of three against New York and continues the team's free fall over the last two weeks. The Yankees have won only two of their six home games since returning from the west coast and now they will venture to Chicago to play the White Sox.
