Gary Sanchez homers again, Yankees beat Orioles

Chad Green, who has dominated opposing batters the last two times on the mound, was looking for another quality start this afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles. He did not pitch well, but the Yankees did plenty with their bats to pull out the 13-5 victory on Saturday, taking the first two games in this huge weekend series with the O’s. They have now won four in a row, and are a season-high six games over .500 at 67-61.

Baltimore threatened right away in the top of the first. After giving up a one-out single against the shift, Chad Green issued a walk and a HBP, which loaded the bases for the Orioles. Green locked down, striking out the next two batters to get out of the inning without giving up a run. In the third inning, however, he wasn’t as fortunate. After walking Mark Trumbo on four consecutive pitches, he laid a 2-1 slider over the middle of the plate, which Chris Davis hit into Monument Park, his 31st HR that gave Baltimore a 2-1 lead. After the Yankees scored in both the third and fourth innings to make it a 5-2 game, Green again faltered. He found out why the Orioles lead the MLB in home runs, as Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis went back-to-back, cutting the Bombers lead to 5-4. After recording the next out on a hard struck ball to deep left, Joe Girardi had seen enough, as he pulled Green one out shy of qualifying for the victory. Tommy Layne, Adam Warren, Tyler Clippard, and Kirby Yates combined to give up a single run out of the bullpen in 4.1 innings of work.

The Yankees offense, which has averaged 5.5 runs per game over the last two weeks, continued to put together great at-bats and timely hitting with RISP. With two runners on in the first inning, Mark Teixeira lined a frozen rope double to right field, plating Jacoby Ellsbury and giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. After falling behind 2-1, Starlin Castro smacked an RBI single, tying the game at 2. With Brian McCann batting, the Yankees pulled off a double steal, with Castro taking second base and Didi Gregorius swiping home, the third steal of home this season for the Yankees. McCann then hit a double the other way, scoring Didi and making it a 4-2 lead. In the fourth, rookie phenom Gary Sanchez hit a fly ball the other way into the first row of seats in right field, giving the Bombers a 5-2 lead. It was Sanchez’s 11th bomb of the season. It took him only 23 games to hit his first 11 homers, which is the quickest anybody in history has reached that many bombs. One inning later, Castro and Aaron Hicks each hammered two-run home runs to left field to open up a five-run lead. The Yankees would add three more runs in the sixth inning and another in the eighth to complete the scoring. For the second straight game, all 9 starters had hits and the offensive production hit double digits.

Tomorrow is the finale of this three-game set against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia (8-10, 4.33 ERA) will start opposite Kevin Gausman (5-10, 3.92 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM ET.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
