Cleveland pitching cools off Bronx Bombers' bats in 5-2 Yankee loss

A night after the Yankee offense exploded for 13 runs, the Indians hit three solo home runs, and got a dominating performance by 2014 Cy Young winner Corey Kluber on their way to a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon,  Kluber, who’s had a great year overall, pitched eight strong innings, giving up just two runs and five hits, his fifth straight quality start in what has been another strong season. Old friend Andrew Miller [worked around a single by Brett Gardner], for the save in the ninth inning.

The Yankees opened the scoring in the second inning. Gary Sanchez hit an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Starlin Castro and giving the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. Sanchez would later score the Yankees second run on a wild pitch by Kluber. The 2014 Cy Young winner shut down the Yankee lineup the rest of the way, giving up just two hits over his final six innings.

CC Sabathia started for the Yankees, and gave up three runs over five and two-third innings, walking four and striking out five. As he has done so many times this season, Sabathia started off strong, but struggled his second and third time through the Indians batting order. Sabathia was also victimized by the long-ball once again, giving up two solo home runs. Jason Kipnis hit his 19th home run of the year to lead off the fourth inning, cutting the 2-0 Yankee lead in half. After Rajai Davis tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning, Mike Napoli hit an opposite field solo home run to put the Indians up for good in the sixth. CC Sabathia has given up 11 home runs in his last nine starts, after giving up just two in his first 11 starts of the year.

The Yankee bullpen struggled after Sabathia’s departure. Rajai Davis, who went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored, hit a solo home run in the top off of the seventh off of Anthony Swarzak. Nick Goody gave up the final Indians run in the ninth inning when Jason Kipnis hit an RBI single, scoring the aforementioned Davis. Between Swarzak and Goody, Chasen Shreve, who returned to the major league roster today, pitched a scoreless inning and a third.

 For the Yankees, Gary Sanchez started his second straight game behind the plate, and threw out his third runner of the series, when Brandon Guyer tried to take second base on a ball that trickled away in the fifth inning. It was one of the few bright spots in what was otherwise a quiet day.

 The Yankees conclude their series against the Indians tomorrow afternoon.Masahiro Tanaka (7-4, 3.46 ERA) goes for the Yankees against Carlos Carrasco (7-5, 3.12 ERA).

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
