Luis Severino gets pounded and demoted following loss to Rays

Luis Severino came into today's start desperately needing to prove himself. In a young lineup that featured Didi Gregorius in the three-hole, along with Gary Sanchez catching, Tyler Austin at first, and Aaron Judge in right field, the Yankees were putting their youth on display. Unfortunately, Severino got the Yankees in a hole they couldn't dig themselves out of.

The Rays wasted no time getting on the board with an Evan Longoria RBI double in the first. They then scored their second run on a Logan Forsyth solo home run.

Aaron Judge then hit his second home run in his many days with the Yankees to put the Yankees within one. However, Tampa Bay would score six runs in the top of the fourth.

Corey Dickerson poked a three-run homer to opposite field to put the Rays ahead 5-1. Evan Longoria later cleared the bases with a three run double to put the Rays ahead 8-1.

Gary Sanchez got in on the youth movement spark with a two-run blast of his own in the bottom of the fourth, but that was all the Yankees could muster today.

The Rays scored four more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Matt Duffy and a three-run shot by Nick Franklin.

This was not the performance the Yankees were looking for going for the sweep of the Rays. Since his horrendous outing today, Severino has already been optioned back to Triple-A, and Chad Green will likely return to the bigs. It is unclear as to who will take Severino's next start.

Luis Cessa relieved Severino and struggled through three innings. He allowed five hits and five runs including a home run raising his ERA from 3.45 to 5.30. Blake Parker and Chasen Shreve both pitched well in their opportunities today.
