Offense, Severino lead Yankees to 9-5 victory over Mets

Chad Green, making his fourth start of the year, labored tonight and was unable to make it through four innings. Luckily for him, he was picked up by the Yankees offense. The Bombers scored three runs in both the first and second innings en route to a 9-5 victory over the Mets on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees came up to bat in the first inning already down by two runs. After a Rob Refsnyder single and a walk to Mark Teixeira, Chase Headley came up and delivered a two-run double in the left-center gap, tying the game. Two batters later, Didi Gregorius came through with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Headley and giving the Yankees their first lead of the game. After the Mets tied the game in the second, a pair of two-out singles brought Teixeira to the plate. He took an 0-1 pitch the other way and into the second row of seats in right field, good for his tenth home run of the year. That hit would give the Yankees a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. They would later tack on three more in the seventh on a Refsnyder sacrifice fly, Starlin Castro infield single, and bases-loaded walk to Gregorius. The nine runs are the most runs scored for the team since July 10, when they plated 11 in the final game before the All-Star Break.

Green looked nothing like the guy who shut down San Diego a month ago. That was evident from the leadoff batter, when Curtis Granderson hit the second pitch of the game into the right field porch to start the scoring. Green pitched into jams in each of the first three innings, and was very fortunate to have only given up three runs. He was able to induce ground balls in each inning that turned into double plays that killed the momentum that the Mets were trying to build. With two outs in the third, Girardi elected to bring in Luis Severino, a move that was undoubtedly the right choice. Sevy was more than ready to accept the call, and pitched 4.1 innings and gave up an unearned run to get the win. Tyler Clippard came in to pitch the ninth, working around a Neil Walker home run to finish the game.

Tomorrow night is the finale of this four game series. The Yankees will pitch Nathan Eovaldi (9-7, 4.78 ERA) against Bartolo Colon (9-6, 3.58 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET on the YES Network.
