After winning an entertaining and exciting game in extra innings over the Mets last night, the Yankees faced Jacob deGrom and the newly acquired Jay Bruce to contend for NYC bragging rights. deGrom and Masahiro Tanaka entered tonight's matchup as the aces for each team. The Yankees had won five of their last seven games at Citi field dating back to the 2015 season heading into tonight. Tanaka also entered tonight's game with the fifth best road ERA in the majors at 1.94. Unfortunately, Tanaka’s impressive road ERA skyrocketed tonight.
Tanaka looked strong through the first two innings, but gave up a towering two-run home run to Alejandro De Aza and a solo shot to Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud. deGrom looked strong through seven innings giving up only four hits, eight strikeouts, one walk, and no runs, keeping Yankee hitters off balanced with a powering fastball and strong offspeed pitches. Tanaka struggled for 6 ⅓ innings allowing seven runs (all earned) on eight hits, with only four strikeouts. It is fair to say that Tanaka did not have his good stuff tonight. A lot of pitches were flat and up in the zone including both the fastball and offspeed.
The seventh inning did not bode well for the pinstripes as Tanaka and the supporting cast of the Yankee bullpen issued four runs to make the game 7-0. Once again the Yankee bats remained quiet with the effort by deGrom and Jonathon Niese out of the pen. The Yankees could only muster one run the entire night on a home run to right field off the bat of Didi Gregorius in the ninth inning.
Both Michael Conforto and deGrom had solid games at the plate as well. Conforto went 2-4 and deGrom 2 -3. deGrom was on his game from both sides tonight. Yoenis Cespedes also had a pinch hit single in the later innings in a double switch as he returned from his quad injury. Alex Rodriguez also pinch hit with two outs in the ninth inning in an odd move by Joe Girardi. There is growing speculation that Rodriguez's days with the Yankees may be numbered as he may be released in the next few days. He flied out to right field to end the game.
Hopefully the Yankees can turn it around tomorrow back at Yankee Stadium. Expect to see Steven Matz against the youngster Chad Green at Yankee stadium for a 7:00 PM ET start.
