Gary Sanchez hits first career homer in Yankees 9-4 win

In the second game of this rivalry, the Yankees came from behind to win 9-4 at Fenway. The story of this game early on was starter Nathan Eovaldi leaving after just one inning with discomfort in his right elbow, as they had to use seven relievers after his exit. Gary Sanchez also hit his first career bomb in the win.

The Red Sox got on the board first in the third inning with a fielder’s choice RBI from Mookie Betts and another one from Andrew Benintendi the next inning. Didi Gregorius’ fifth inning homer made it 2-1. Despite the low score, each team had plenty of chances, as Boston had the bases loaded in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, resulting in just two runs. The Sox scored two more in the sixth on an RBI single from Dustin Pedroia and another fielder’s choice RBI from Xander Bogaerts, both runs charged to recently added Tommy Layne. Betts also had a double in the inning, as Bogaerts was gunned down at home from a relay from Jacoby Ellsbury to Gregorius to Austin Romine. This play turned out to be crucial, as it held the Sox from scoring any more runs.

The Yankees offense completely turned around once Pomeranz left in the sixth, as they scored five runs on six hits in the seventh inning. They got RBI singles from Romine, Chase Headley, and Ellsbury. Starlin Castro’s two-run double turned out to drive in the go-ahead run for the Yanks. The Yanks tacked on another three runs in the eighth, including a homer from Gary Sanchez - the first of his career. Their other two runs in the inning came on multiple wild pitches from Boston reliever Robbie Ross Jr.

For the Red Sox, recently acquired Drew Pomeranz gave them a solid outing, going 5.1 IP, allowing one run and getting six strikeouts. Despite his good start, he is still searching for his first win since joining the team. Other than the Gregorius homer he allowed, the Yanks lackluster offense, that included Headley batting third, couldn’t get anything going against him.

The aforementioned Gary Sanchez continues to impress, as he hit the first homer of his career and added another three hits. After a slow start to the game, New York’s offense scored eight consecutive runs and got an RBI from six different guys. They ended up with nine runs on a total of 15 hits.

Tomorrow night’s rubber match game previews Michael Pineda (6-10, 5.17 ERA) facing off against youngster Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.93 ERA). On paper, the Red Sox definitely have the advantage, as Rodriguez has immense potential and in his lone start against the Yanks this season, he pitched seven innings of four hit ball, allowing just one run. Pineda has a 5.06 ERA in two starts against Boston this season.
