Minor league update part 2: Trenton Thunder

Trenton Thunder: 19-16 (3rd in Eastern League Eastern Division Standings, 4.0 games back)
Overall: Although the Trenton Thunder lack the Yankees top talent in the farm system, they have a solid team. Still, this Thunder team is comprised of Tyler Austin (#30 in our rankings), Cale Coshow (#27), Dustin Fowler (#7), Jonathan Holder (#22) and Tyler Wade (#14). They’re also getting contributions from others which has propelled them to their solid current standing.
Jose Rosario: Jose Rosario has been a hitting machine in the minors this year. He’s hitting .309 in 16 games Trenton and he also hit .294 in 4 games in Scranton. For a guy who has been hitting towards the bottom of the order, he’s been a pleasant surprise for the team.

 Tyler Wade: Before the season, one scout said with full confidence that Tyler Wade would become a serviceable middle infielder at the major league level. After hitting just .204 in 29 games in Trenton in 2015, Wade has seemed to make adjustments and now posts a slash line of .272/.364/.376. We’d like to see him improve his gap to gap power, but the left-handed hitting middle infielder does a little bit of everything, and he’s a solid prospect.

Dustin Fowler: Fowler is the team’s most promising prospect which is why he was ranked #7 in our preseason rankings. He’s not off to a great start hitting .269/.312/.369 with 7 doubles, 3 triples and 8 steals in 33 games. His pop is the only question mark to his game so ideally, he continues getting stronger and begins hitting the ball out of the ballpark more regularly.

Giovanny Gallegos: In 11 appearances out of the bullpen, Gallegos posts an ERA of 1.74 with a meager 1.02 WHIP. He’s also struck out an incredible 32 hitters in 20.2 innings. The 24 year-old had a great 2015 campaign, and with another one this year, he’s likely to reach Scranton and knock on the door to being call-up as part of the Scranton Shuttle.

 Ronald Herrera: After being traded for Jose Pirela this offseason, Ronald Herrera and Jonathan Holder combined for a no-hitter on April 26 of this season. Herrera tossed 8 innings and Holder would finish the job in the 9th. In 6 starts with the Double-A squad, Herrera has a 2.11 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. In trading a major league talent in Jose Pirela for this prospect, I’m assuming the Yankees have reasonably high expectations for this 21 year-old to make it to the big leagues at some point.

Jonathan Holder: Speaking of Holder, he is pitching well in Trenton as well with a 2.93 ERA in 9 games, including 1 save. With 23 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, he’s been a valuable asset for the Thunder.

Jordan Montgomery: Jordan Montgomery is another starter who is having success in Double-A. The University of South Carolina product posted a very nice 2015 season and is piecing together another such season this year with a 2.61 ERA through 6 starts. He was an honorable  mention on our top prospect list, and with a good first half, he might break the top 30 in our midseason rankings.

Trade Market the Perfect Storm for Yankees to Acquire Starter

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. Sure little rumors have serviced here or there about them maybe pursuing Zach Greinke who has recently opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that move reeks of the move CC Sabathia pulled in opting out of his contract with the Yankees a few years back to simply restructure his contract and make a better payday.   However, instances like CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka are why I believe the Yankees aren’t going to shell out big money and a long term contract for a big name starter this year. No team in baseball history has a story quite like the Yankees. 27 times they’ve found baseball Nirvana which is 16 more than the next closest team (Cardinals). 40 times have the Yankees won the American League, and that is also a major league record. The franchise won four straight championships from 1936-1939 and five straight from 1949-1953, a task no other team has ever accomplished.
