Nova's solid outing, dominant bullpen propels Yankees to 2-1 win

After giving up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings, Luis Severino exited the game early with an injury, and an MRI after the game revealed a right triceps strain. Although the Yankees lost 7-1, the Yankees bullpen that took over after Severino left pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, led by 3.1 innings from Nick Goody. The Yankees sent Ivan Nova to the mound today to face Chicago’s Jose Quintana. Before the game, the Yankees called up Chad Green and Conor Mullee from Triple-A Scranton, sent Gary Sanchez back down to Scranton, and put Severino on the 15-day disabled list. Chase Headley has been hitting well lately, as he had a 5-game hitting streak, 4-game RBI streak, and a 2-game RBI streak entering Saturday’s game.

Winning Pitcher: Ivan Nova (2-1, 3.70 ERA) - 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Losing Pitcher: Jose Quintana (5-2, 1.54 ERA)  - 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Save: Aroldis Chapman (2, 3.00 ERA) - 1.0 IP, 2 K
1st Inning
Jose Abreu doubled with two outs, but Nova struck out Todd Frazier looking to end the top of the first. The Yankees went down in order. (Scoreless)
2nd Inning
Melky Cabrera led off the second with a single, but Nova worked through the rest of the inning without issue. After Chase Headley walked with two outs and none on, Aaron Hicks doubled over Adam Eaton’s head and Headley scored all the way from first!

Then, Didi Gregorius singled to right field and Aaron Hicks scored, and the Yankees lead 2-0. Austin Romine doubled to deep right center, but the ball bounced over the wall, preventing Didi from scoring. Brett Gardner grounded out, but the Yankees led 2-0 after two innings. (Yankees 2-0)
3rd Inning
Both teams went down in order. (Yankees 2-0)
4th Inning
Todd Frazier got the White Sox on the board with a solo homer to left. The Yankees went down in order. (Yankees 2-1)
5th Inning
The White Sox went down in order. After a leadoff double by Didi Gregorius, the Yankees could not score. Austin Romine lined out sharply to Adam Eaton in right and Gardner and Castro struck out. (Yankees 2-1)
6th Inning
After two straight outs, Todd Frazier walked, and that was all for Nova. Dellin Betances came in to face Melky Cabrera and struck him out on a 3-2 curveball to end the top of the 6th.

7th Inning
Betances struck out the side. Didi Gregorius continued his great afternoon with a single, but Austin Romine grounded into a double play to end the inning. (Yankees 2-1)
8th Inning
Andrew Miller entered for the Yankees and struck out two batters in a scoreless inning. Zach Duke entered for Quintana to start the bottom of the 8th.
9th Inning
Aroldis Chapman entered to start the ninth. After several foul balls, Chapman struck out Frazier with a 101 MPH fastball and Jerry Sands on a 99 MPH fastball. The next batter, Brett Lawrie flied out, and the Yankees won 2-1.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
