Austin Romine needs to be Nathan Eovaldi’s personal catcher
After the Yankees 8-2 win
over the Red Sox it had marked Nathan Eovaldi’s sixth start of the season and
his third with Austin Romine behind the dish. In two of the three starts with
Romine, Eovaldi has pitched gems, including taking a no-hitter into the seventh
inning against the Rangers.

In three starts with
Romine catching, Eovaldi has thrown 20 innings, allowing eight runs on 18 hits,
five walks and 15 strikeouts, equaling to a 3.60 ERA. Take away the one bad
start in Boston and he’s pitched to a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings. In his other
three starts without Romine, Eovaldi has pitched 17.2 innings, allowing 12 runs
on 21 hits with three walks and 22 strikeouts, equaling out to a 6.28 ERA.
Not only is this pair
affecting Eovaldi, but also Romine in a positive way. In his three starts with
Eovaldi, Romine is 5-10 (.500) with two doubles and two runs batted in,
including 5-8 (.625) in the two starts Eovaldi won.
While Romine, a career
.219 hitter, is better known for his defense he is hitting the cover off the
ball in the early going, hitting .348 with 3 RBI in 23 at bats across 12 games.
While Brian McCann is the Yankees starting catcher, a way to scale back his
workload is to let Romine catch Eovaldi’s starts and if they both can keep this
success up, it can be the best personal catcher combo since A.J. Burnett and
Francisco Cervelli back in the day.
