Wright shuts down Yankees offense, Ortiz homers twice as Red Sox avoid sweep with 5-1 win
After a 3-2 win on Friday and an 8-2 win on Saturday, the Yankees came into Mother’s Day on Sunday looking for a sweep of the Boston Red Sox at home. Just a week earlier, they were swept at Fenway Park, also on Sunday Night Baseball. Nathan Eovaldi threw eight brilliant innings to lead the Yankees to win on Saturday, and was backed by a resurgent offense, led by Carlos Beltran, Didi Gregorius, and Austin Romine. Today, the Yankees sent their young star, Luis Severino (0-4, 6.31 ERA) to the hill to face Boston’s Steven Wright (2-3, 1.67 ERA), who is one of the only two active knuckleball pitchers in Major League Baseball (R.A. Dickey being the other). Aroldis Chapman's suspension ends tomorrow and he will rejoin the team as the closer.

1st Inning

Brian McCann singled with two outs, but the Yankees could not threaten. (Red Sox 2-0)
2nd Inning
Severino looked sharp in his second inning of work, as he struck out the side on 14 pitches. In the bottom half, Dustin Ackley walked with one out, but Aaron Hicks grounded into a double play to end the inning. (Red Sox 2-0)
3rd Inning
Both teams went down in order. (Red Sox 2-0)
4th Inning

Severino struck out two in this inning, and had eight strikeouts through four. The Yankees went down in order, and Starlin Castro and Mark Teixeira both struck out. (Red Sox 3-0)
5th Inning
Severino retired the side in order. Steven Wright, meanwhile, continued to coast through the Yankees by setting them down in order. (Red Sox 3-0)
6th Inning
Both teams went down in order. The Yankees had only one hit through six innings. (Red Sox 3-0)
7th Inning
David Ortiz shrugged off the loud boos at Yankee Stadium and drilled another home run to extend the Red Sox lead to 4-0. After recording two outs, Brock Holt singled off of Severino, so Chasen Shreve came in. Jackie Bradley, Jr. doubled to left, but thankfully, the ball skipped into the stands, which prevented Holt from scoring. Shreve struck out Ryan Hanigan to end the threat. In the bottom of the half, Starlin Castro led off with a double, and advanced to third on a Brian McCann fly ball out to right.

However, Castro was picked off of third after he started toward home on a Steven Wright pitch that bounced in front of the plate. Castro at least made a clever attempt to avoid the tag, but was called out when his momentum pulled his hand off the third base bag. (Red Sox 4-0)
8th Inning
Xander Bogaerts hit a solo home run to left center off of Chasen Shreve to extend the Red Sox lead to 5-0. Wright retired the Yankees in order. (Red Sox 5-0)
9th Inning
Johnny Barbato entered to start the ninth. He hit Hanley Ramirez with a 0-2 pitch, then stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw. Then, Travis Shaw's line drive to Brett Gardner in left was caught, and Gardner threw a perfect dart to McCann at home and Ramirez was out trying to score. Wright came back out for the ninth for the shutout, but with two outs, Brett Gardner homered to right to cut the lead to 5-1. Wright struck out pinch-hitter Ronald Torreyes to finish off the complete game win and help the Red Sox avoid the sweep, by a score of 5-1.
Next Game: Monday, May 9, 2016: Royals (Chris Young) @ Yankees (Ivan Nova)
In your twitter drafts you had it saved 5-0. You tweeted that out. That proves you have no respect or confidence in the Yankees to avoid the shutout.
ReplyDeleteI hate it but youre right. Unfortunately this guy isnt much of a believer when it comes to the yankees. Most our fans actually now that i think about it tend to lose confidence in our yankees pretty damn fast. Unfortunate though we will probably struggle for another 10 years. We have no real prospects tbh...
