2022 Bronx Bomber Ball Hall of Fame mock vote

Image
Tonight, there is a semblance of normal in the baseball world for the first time in nearly two months. The results of the 2022 BBWAA Hall of Fame vote will be revealed at 6 PM on MLB Network. And for the sixth consecutive year, the writers of Bronx Bomber Ball participated in a mock vote of our own. Photo Credit: MLB.com Per BBWAA guidelines, each voter is allotted 10 votes, though they are not obligated to use all (or any) of them. Players that receive a vote on 75% of ballots cast will be enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  This year’s ballot unquestionably holds the highest stakes we’ve seen in recent years. It’s the last call for some of the game’s greatest icons in Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, whose candidacies have been shrouded by their use of steroids. Newcomers Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz, though beloved by their teams’ respective fanbases, were also linked to PEDs at points in their careers.  Nevertheless, our team largely decided that ...

Wright shuts down Yankees offense, Ortiz homers twice as Red Sox avoid sweep with 5-1 win

After a 3-2 win on Friday and an 8-2 win on Saturday, the Yankees came into Mother’s Day on Sunday looking for a sweep of the Boston Red Sox at home. Just a week earlier, they were swept at Fenway Park, also on Sunday Night Baseball. Nathan Eovaldi threw eight brilliant innings to lead the Yankees to win on Saturday, and was backed by a resurgent offense, led by Carlos Beltran, Didi Gregorius, and Austin Romine. Today, the Yankees sent their young star, Luis Severino (0-4, 6.31 ERA) to the hill to face Boston’s Steven Wright (2-3, 1.67 ERA), who is one of the only two active knuckleball pitchers in Major League Baseball (R.A. Dickey being the other).  Aroldis Chapman's suspension ends tomorrow and he will rejoin the team as the closer.  Picture Credit: Associated Press/Kathy Willens

Controversial calls and Aaron Hicks home run in the 7th gives Yankees 3-2 win

The Yankees lost a heartbreaker last night, 1-0, in ten innings at Camden Yards against Baltimore. Masahiro Tanaka was brilliant, but the Yankees offense failed to crack the scoreboard against Kevin Gausman of the Orioles. Today, the Yankees returned to The Bronx to start a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, after getting swept by the Red Sox earlier this season. The Yankees sent Michael Pineda to the mound to face Boston’s Rick Porcello. Earlier today, the Yankees got unfortunate news as CC Sabathia went on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain, and the Yankees called up Phil Coke as the roster replacement. This will be the last series the Yankees play before Aroldis Chapman returns from his suspension.  Picture Credit: Associated Press/Kathy Kmonicek

Porcello's brilliant outing, coupled with Red Sox offense lifts Boston to 8-0 win

Image
After last night’s disappointing 4-2 loss to the Red Sox, where David Ortiz drilled a tie-breaking 2-run home run off of Dellin Betances in the 8th, the Yankees will send Michael Pineda (1-2, 6.95 ERA) to face off against Boston’s Rick Porcello (4-0, 3.51 ERA). Pineda has struggled heavily all season, as his high ERA has shown. Meanwhile, Porcello hasn’t lost an outing this season. The Yankees have been struggling on offense, ranking 29th in runs and they have only score 12 runs in their last six games. Meanwhile, their crosstown rivals in Queens, scored 12 runs in one inning alone last night. Chase Headley, arguably the biggest liability on offense, has not had an extra base hit and has the lowest batting average (.140) out of all qualified batters in the majors. Pineda must right the ship and the Yankees will need to restart its offense again in order to win tonight. Picture Credit: Associated Press/Michael Dwyer

Betances allows homer to Ortiz as game slips away from Yanks late

The Yankees began a weekend series with the Boston Red Sox on Friday with their ace Masahiro Tanaka on the hill against Red Sox youngster Henry Owens. Although the Yankees offense was less than stellar, Tanaka put together a very solid outing, making one pitch he wishes he could take back.
