Don’t look now, but the Yankees might be hitting their first real rough patch of the season.   While it’s hard to complain about a team with a 58-23 record at the midway point of the season, the Yankees have a crucial stretch of games coming up against the second-place Boston Red Sox, and the offensive has gone through a bit of a cold streak that hopefully doesn’t linger through those important games.

Hello all and welcome back to your favorite yearly tradition that slowly disappears by mid June! Hopefully that is not the case this season, and the best bettors in the world to fade just become the best bettors in the world period.

  The question on everyone’s mind as we head into this week is: Are the Yankees back? 

After landing the biggest fish in Free Agency this past Winter, the Yankees enter 2020 as the clear favorites in the American League East.  That is not meant to suggest that they have no competition, however, as New York was not the only team to improve during the offseason, with the Rays making their usual under-the-radar moves that will help them win and the Blue Jays made a big splash signing with Hyun-Jin Ryu.  Let’s dive into the predictions. Former Yankees First Baseman and General Manager, Bob “Bull” Watson, has passed away after a battle with kidney disease. Watson became the first African-American General Manager to win a World Series in 1996, after putting together the 1996 Yankees who ended the franchise’s 18-year drought without a World Series Title.  Watson and his successor, Brian Cashman (Photo by Michael  Schwartz) Watson also has a gold medal, as the Chairman of USA Baseball’s selection committee for the 2000 Olympics. Watson is still the only executive to hold a gold medal in addition to a World Series ring. He played 14 seasons with the Houston Astros before playing a season with the Red Sox, and three each with the Yankees and Atlanta Braves. After Thursday’s game got rained out, the Yankees and Red Sox were able to start a three game series Friday night in the Bronx. Chris Sale looked to continue his great May against a Yankees lineup that was missing many of their top righties. The offense, led by the bottom of the lineup and D.J. LeMahieu, was still able to score four runs against him though, and the pitching staff all did their job to secure a 4-1 victory. Following a series win against Toronto, the Yankees will face off against the Orioles in a four game series between division foes. The series will feature four games in three days, including a double header on July 9 to make up for a June matchup which was postponed due to inclement weather. The Yankees and Orioles haven’t faced off since June 2 and since that game the Orioles have only won seven games. The Yankees since that game have won twenty one games, tripling the Orioles total in that span. The Orioles are the division’s cellar dwellers and, frankly, the Yankees should easily take at least three games in this series and try to continue keeping pace with the Red Sox for the division lead.

Very few series in June feel this important. For the third time this year, and the second time in the Bronx, the Yankees will battle the Red Sox in a three-game series. Both teams have been fantastic this year, as both are coming into the series with the best two records in all of baseball. The Yankees had an off-day Thursday, and before that won a three-game series in Philadelphia, and the Red Sox are fresh off a series win against the Los Angeles Angels in Boston. So far this year the teams have split their six games, each winning two at home. The first series, which was in Boston, had a lot of drama, including a bench-clearing brawl started by Tyler Austin and Joe Kelly. With first place at stake, and tensions high, we should be in for a great series from the best rivalry in sports.

Today, the Yankees announced that they have optioned outfielder Clint Frazier back to Triple-A and recalled catcher Kyle Higashioka from Triple-A, as well as reliever Giovanny Gallegos before their series opening game tonight in Philadelphia. With Brett Gardner returning from injury, Clint Frazier is the odd man out in the Yankees outfield and will see more time with Scranton Wilkes-Barre for now. Tonight is the beginning of what should be an incredibly fun series. The Red Sox are still a game up on the Yankees and hold the best record in baseball. The Yankees are coming off a torrid pace winning the past 15 of their 16 games, and now face off against the rival Boston Red Sox in the Bronx after a much needed off day.  There was plenty of fireworks in their previous meeting in Fenway, as the Yankees series loss was punctuated by an instant classic bench clearing brawl between Tyler Austin and Joe Kelly.  It was less than a month ago that many fans thought the Bombers were in big trouble, as they were trailing Boston in the division by seven games. Yankees-Red Sox is one of the greatest rivalries in sports, and Wednesday night was one to remember. Yankees first baseman Tyler Austin took a hard slide into second base in the top of the third inning, catching Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt back leg with his cleat. Holt obviously upset with Austin, exchanged a few pleasantries with the young Yankee, causing the benches and bullpens to clear. Wednesday provided a dream day for this blog. The Yankees hit the projected over in the fourth inning and the Yankees won outright. Yesterday was terrible. In every possible way. The Red Sox were major favors going into the game, and this blog tried to outsmart the bookmakers and play the Yankee spread. Vegas always wins, and sure enough dominated my pick. Today will be different, though. Photo Credit: MLB.com

Sunday finally resulted in this blog predicting the over, and us actually hitting that over. Holding true with the trend of this season, a win here meant a sickening Yankee loss. Matt Holliday’s three run shot in his first game back off the DL proves to be the big difference today in the win for the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka was about as good as he gets, providing seven innings of one run ball. The Yankees were three-for-five with runners in scoring position and Chase Headley recorded his eighth three hit game of the season en route to a 5-1 Yankees victory.

After a big win last night behind the Yankee stopper CC Sabathia, the Bombers looked to snag another game from the Red Sox with Sonny Gray on the mound. The game started out fast with a quick run in the first, but that was the highlight for the Yankees as three Boston home runs doomed Gray and the Bombers, dropping them back to 5.5 games behind their rivals.
