Deivi Garcia is on a fast track to the Bronx

The Yankees are no strangers to late-season breakouts. Take Gary Sanchez in 2016 and Luke Voit just last year, for example. Now, they may have another candidate on their hands - prized 20-year-old pitcher Deivi Garcia.

Garcia ranks as the Yankees’ #4 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The 5’9” right-hander has shredded through the minors of the Yankees’ system in 2019. After just four games at High-A, he was promoted to Double-A, where he pitched to a 3.00 ERA with a ridiculous 14.29 K/9, holding opposing hitters to a .193 average over 10 starts. Notably, he started the SiriusXM Futures Game for the American League during All-Star week, tossing a 1-2-3 first inning.

Garcia features an electric curveball and a deceptive fastball that has touched 96 miles per hour. General manager Brian Cashman has spoken Garcia’s praises often as of late, and he confirmed on MLB Network earlier this week that he is “not for sale.” Hailed by some as ‘Sevy 2.0,’ the young phenom could be just what the Yankees need in the coming years as they face some uncertainty at the back-end of the rotation.

Cashman just said on @Jim_Duquette Sirius/Xm show that Deivi García is “pushing himself into the mix” for helping this year.

Following a promotion to Triple-A last week, Garcia now stands just one step away from the majors, still 10 months from his 21st birthday. With a division race on the horizon, it’s highly unlikely Garcia would see any starting opportunities in the Bronx this season. However, his high-octane arm could become a blessing to the Yankees’ middle-relief corps, which has had no shortage of troubles this year. Regardless of how it plays out, the Yankees once again have a stud on their hands, and they know it.
