Yankees get no timely hitting as Blue Jays complete sweep with shutout

After propelling themselves to a .500 record on May 24, the Yankees have been struggling mightily. Following tonight’s loss in Toronto, the Jays completed the sweep of the Yankees dropping the Yankees to a 2-6 record over their last 8 games since reaching the .500 mark. As the familiar storyline this season for the New York Yankees, the team once again could not muster anything in threatening situations, failing to hit with runners in scoring position (1-8, 9 runners left on base). And although this is a credit to Blue Jays pitchers, the Yankees offense has fallen back to its April woes.

 Once again, and far too often this early in the season, Masahiro Tanaka was tasked with stopping a Yankee losing streak. The box score indicates a fine outing for the Yankee ace, but Tanaka was far from effective tonight. Tanaka continually fell behind batters and was not missing many bats as confirmed by his low strikeout total of just two.

The Blue Jays got the first run on the board thanks to a single to right field by Josh Donaldson. Donaldson was caught up trying for two, but Darwin Barney was able to come home on the play.

A leadoff double by Michael Saunders would get the Blue Jays threatening in the sixth. Justin Smoak followed Saunders as he smoked one to center field. However, in an uncharacteristic misplay, the ball simply bounced off Jacoby Ellsbury’s glove as he was tagged with an error. The ensuing hitter Russell Martin would ground into a double play, but Saunders came home on the play.

The Yankee bullpen imploded in the seventh as Kirby Yates could not find the strike zone. Edwin Encarnacion drove home two runs on a single which knocked Yates from the game. Nick Goody then entered and he surrendered an RBI double to Saunders, as well as a 2-RBI single to Smoak.

The loss knocks the Yankees to 24-28 as they have not been playing good baseball of late. They will have a makeup game in Detroit tomorrow before starting a three game weekend set with Baltimore.

Trade Market the Perfect Storm for Yankees to Acquire Starter

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George. Sure little rumors have serviced here or there about them maybe pursuing Zach Greinke who has recently opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that move reeks of the move CC Sabathia pulled in opting out of his contract with the Yankees a few years back to simply restructure his contract and make a better payday.   However, instances like CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka are why I believe the Yankees aren’t going to shell out big money and a long term contract for a big name starter this year.
