Yankees missed opportunities cause game to slip away in 12th inning in 2-1 loss to Giants
In an extra inning marathon that no one seemed to want to win, Mac Williamson drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning, giving the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon. The Yankees middle relief was once again the culprit - Anthony Swarzak took the loss following four dominant innings of scoreless relief from No Runs DMC. With the win the Giants snapped a six-game losing streak. The Yankees, meanwhile, are now 5-4 on a critical 10 game home stand coming out of the All-Star break.

Both starters pitched well. Ivan Nova turned in his longest, and arguably best performance of the season, giving up just the home run to Williamson and scattering six hits over seven innings. After a rough June, where Nova pitched to a 7.52 ERA, he has given up just one earned run in three of his four starts in July. Following Friday night’s loss, manager Bruce Bochy turned to Johnny Cueto, who was originally slated to start on Sunday. Cueto turned in a gritty performance, giving up one unearned run in six innings. Cueto got out of several jams, particularly early in the game, as the Yankees stranded two runners in each of the second, third and fourth innings.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game in extra innings before Williamson broke through in the 12th. His go-ahead RBI bailed out Angel Pagan, who failed to score from third base in the top of the 11th, in one of the more bizarre at bats that you will ever see. With two outs, Joe Girardi instructed Dellin Betances to intentionally walk Brandon Crawford, who is leading the Giants with 61 RBIs. Betances threw a wild pitch on his first intentional ball, but Pagan was caught napping and failed to score. Betances would go on to retire Crawford to end the inning.
The Yankees, meanwhile also had their opportunities. In the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees loaded the bases on walks with one out. Brian McCann flew out to short left field, and Starlin Castro flew out to right to end the inning. The team continues to be plagued by poor situational hitting, as they have been all season long. On Saturday the Yankees went 0-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners left on base.
Gregorius was one of the few bright spots in the lineup and had another strong game. At the plate, he went 2-5 with a run scored, raising his overall average to .297. Gregorius is now hitting .340 since June 8th. Defensively, Gregorius saved a run with a strong relay throw home to get Williamson attempting to score in the top of the second.
The Yankees and Giants play the rubber match in their three game series tomorrow afternoon, and the Yankees will likely have to try to win without the services of Betances, Miller and Chapman who have all pitched in each of the last two games. Nathan Eovaldi (8-6, 4.93 ERA) will try to win his second straight as he goes up against Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 4.05 ERA).
