Didi Gregorius deserves to be an All-Star, but won’t be
When the Yankees traded for Didi
Gregorius, no one had a single clue of what the Yankees were getting. Everyone
knew Gregorius had a solid glove, but the question was always the bat. While
Gregorius’ first month in pinstripes was pretty bad, the Yankees shortstop was
able to turn things around and become a mainstay in the Yankees’ lineup.

While Gregorius is having a career
year, it’s really hard to see him getting chosen to the All-Star game. Despite
having the fourth best batting average among AL shortstops, Gregorius doesn’t
rank higher than fifth in any of the offensive categories among AL shortstops.
While Gregorius is also stellar with the glove at times, he ranks fourth among
AL shortstops in errors while only seventh in innings played. Also with
shortstops such as Carlos Correa, Francisco Lindor, Xander Bogaerts, Elvis
Andrus and the surprising season of former Yankee Eduardo Nunez, it’s hard for
someone like Gregorius to get any recognition.
While he will most likely not be an
All-Star in 2016, Gregorius is having a very productive season and I am perfectly
fine with him being our shortstop. Considering that all we gave up for
Gregorius was Shane Greene (5.27 ERA in 17 games in 2016), I feel like I can
already say the Yankees won this trade after only a season and a half. If
Gregorius can keep this production up, he can become one of the best
shortstops in baseball.
