Chad Green surrenders seven earned in 10-2 loss to Indians

After a solid 5-4 victory on Thursday night, the Yankees were once again looking for a win to get back to .500 on the year. The Yankees sent Chad Green up against former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber. Kluber had a stellar night giving up one run across eight innings with eight strikeouts which was juxtaposed by Green’s horrendous night where he surrendered seven earned runs across 4.1 innings en route to a 10-2 loss.

The Tribe jumped on Green early to put up a four-run first inning which began on back-to-back home runs to start the game by Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis. Green was rattled as he would then walk Francisco Lindor before serving up a two-run shot to Lonnie Chisenhall to give Cleveland a 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, Green walked Lindor once again before throwing a 95 MPH fastball right down the middle that Mike Napoli did not miss. Napoli bombed it 460 feet, and just like that, it was 6-0, Indians.

After allowing a single to Kipnis with one away in the fifth, Green was lifted for lefty Richard Bleier. Bleier allowed a double to Lindor which scored Kipnis to move the lead to seven. The ensuing hitter, Napoli, drove Lindor home with a single and it was 8-0 at that point.

The Indians would manufacture another run in the sixth after an RBI groundout by Yan Gomes. Brian McCann broke up the shutout with an opposite field solo home run in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-1 ballgame. However, shutdown innings do not exist for Yankee pitchers (for what it’s worth in an eight-run ballgame), and Anthony Swarzak allowed a solo homer to Kipnis and to make the score 10-1. Chasen Shreve pitched a clean 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Yankees to boost his confidence.

 The Yankees got back-to-back doubles from Carlos Beltran and McCann to bring home their second run of the ballgame but that was all they could muster in the ninth inning.

With the series tied at one game apiece, the Yankees will look to win games three and four to get back to .500 at the All-Star break. Unfortunately, things will not get any easier for the Yankees as CC Sabathia will go up against Danny Salazar on Saturday and Masahiro Tanaka will oppose Carlos Carrasco on Sunday. Things look rather bleak for the Yankees after tonight’s loss, but if there’s any silver lining, it may help the front office realize that this team is not capable of eclipsing the .500 mark for an extended amount of time.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
