Pineda falters in crucial start on cusp of trade deadline as Rays complete sweep of Yankees

After trading Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians for four prospects early Sunday morning, the Yankees took the field trying to salvage the last game of their series against the Tampa Bay Rays. As has been the case all series long, the Rays got the timely hits that the Yankees didn’t and completed the sweep with a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Kevin Kiermaier and Tim Beckham hit back to back RBI ground-outs to give the Rays a 2-0 lead. Brad Miller extended the lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run off of Michael Pineda, who started for the Yankees. Carlos Beltran, the lone bright spot in the Yankee lineup and brought the Yankees back within one run with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Pineda gave those runs right back in the bottom of the sixth, as Luke Maile hit a two-RBI single after the Rays loaded the bases.

The Yankee offense once against struggled with situational hitting, unable to drive in runs at key moments in the game, and hitting into three key double plays. In the fourth inning, Didi Gregorius hit into a double play with the bases loaded and one out, In the eighth inning, Brian McCann drove in Starlin Castro to drive in the third Yankee run. Chase Headley then hit into a double play, killing the rally.

After “good Pineda” showed up against the Orioles and Astros, “bad Pineda” returned against the Rays. Pineda gave us all five runs, over six innings, walking four and striking out eight. Luis Severino, who will likely get more opportunities to pitch down the stretch with the trades of Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Blake Snell, who started for the Rays, gave up just the Beltran home run over 5.1 innings, and struck out nine along the way. Four Rays relievers combined to pitch the rest of the way, giving up one run and four hits over the final 3.2 innings.

The Yankees return to New York tomorrow where they will begin this year’s edition of the Subway Series. C.C. Sabathia (6-8, 3.95 ERA) starts against Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.12 ERA) on Monday night at Citi Field at 7:10 PM ET.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
