Tanaka shuts down Giants as late error gives Yankees 3-2 win
Fresh
off a series victory against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees welcomed the
San Francisco Giants to town for a three game weekend series. Game one was a
highly anticipated battle between the Aces Masahiro Tanaka and Madison
Bumgarner. Tanaka was stellar across six innings before handing the ball off to
'No Run DMC,' who didn't quite live up to the name tonight despite hanging on for
a 3-2 win.

The
Yankees struck first in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI double by
Starlin Castro, who had a very nice night at the plate, scoring Brett Gardner
from first. Carlos Beltran then gave the Yankees their second run on a single
left scoring Ronald Torreyes.
Masahiro
Tanaka stifled the Giants lineup tonight as they were unable to score a run off
him. Dellin Betances entered for the seventh inning and ran himself into
trouble allowing an earned run on a wild pitch to bring the Giants within a run
with a 2-1 score. In the eighth inning, Andrew Miller would allow the tying run
on a double by Mac Williamson scoring Trevor Brown. Miller allowed three hits
but bailed himself out with a big strikeout of Ramiro Pena to end the inning
with the score knotted a two.
The
Yankees rallied in the bottom of the eighth with a lead off single by Chase
Headley followed by a walk to Mark Teixeira. Austin Romine then grounded to
Brandon Crawford at shortstop who stepped on second for the force out before
making an arid throw to first scoring Headley from second on the error. It was
the type of break the Yankees have been looking for all season.
Aroldis
Chapman came on for the ninth inning looking to convert his 20th save. Gregor
Blanco led off the ninth with a double but Chapman was able to set the next
three hitters down in order to give the Yankees a 3-2 win.
