Padres defeat Yankees once again on Melvin Upton Jr. walk-off homer

With an intriguing pitching matchup of two pitchers trending in opposite directions in Ivan Nova for the Yankees vs. Drew Pomeranz for the Padres, Nova had to be on top of his game to keep the Yankees in the ballgame. He did just that. However, the Padres (35-46) left the game as walk-off winners when Melvin Upton Jr. belted the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning way over the left field wall to beat the Yankees (39-41) in the second game of the series to give San Diego a 2-1 victory.

The Yankees only run came in the top of the sixth, when Jacoby Ellsbury doubled to lead off the inning and was moved to third by Brett Gardner’s single. Starlin Castro grounded out to score Ellsbury and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Wil Myers walked with one out in the bottom of the sixth and stole second to get himself in scoring position which paid off when he scored after Matt Kemp hit him in with a double to tie the game back up at one. Rob Refsnyder gunned down Matt Kemp on a close play at the plate from right field to end the sixth inning and stop the Padres from taking a one run lead.

Drew Pomeranz looked good against the Yankees continuing what has been a great season for him so far. He finished with a line of 7.0 innings pitched, five hits, one earned run and seven strikeouts.

Ivan Nova kept the Yankees in the game for the 5.1 innings he pitched giving up only four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts before being replaced by Dellin Betances. After Betances tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, Andrew Miller came on in relief in the eighth inning. Miller would throw a scoreless eighth inning before allowing a walk-off homer to Melvin Upton Jr.

Miller now falls to 5-1 on the season after allowing a rare home run. The Yankees will now look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon as Chad Green (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will oppose Andrew Cashner (3-5, 4.75 ERA). The Yankees have had a knack for reaching the .500 mark before going on a losing streak, and that tend looks like it is continuing as the Yankees have dropped the first two in this series after reaching the .500 mark.

Winning Pitcher: Brad Hand (2-2, 3.38 ERA) - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Losing Pitcher: Andrew Miller (5-1, 1.51 ERA) - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
Notables:
Melvin Upton Jr.: 3-4, walk-off HR (13)
Travis Jankowski: 2-3, BB, SB (11)
Jacoby Ellsbury: 2-4, 2B, R
Brett Gardner: 2-4, 2B
