2015 2nd Half and Full Season Awards
Most
Valuable Player
2nd Half: Carlos
Beltran
Man has Beltran turns
things around once the calendar turned to May. After thinking he was done after
an abysmal April, Beltran became one of the key cogs in the Yankees postseason
push. His defense certainly didn’t help for his MVP push, but his bat was able
to carry this team for most of the season.
Honorable Mentions:
Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, Arizona Diamondbacks
This decision was a tough
one because there was no clear cut candidate after Teixeira went down with an
injury, but I decided to pick McCann based on his power hitting, good defense,
and his ability to stay healthy. Although the final few weeks of the season
were ones to forget, McCann had a pretty solid season in his second year in
pinstripes.
Honorable Mentions:
Alex Rodriguez, Dellin Betances, Carlos Beltran
Most
Valuable Pitcher:
2nd Half:
Masahiro Tanaka
With everyone waiting
for his ligament in his arm to snap, Tanaka was able to get through most of the
season and pitched his way into starting the Wild Card game. Although he is
prone to giving up the long ball, Tanaka was able to give solid outings day in
and day out.
Honorable Mentions:
Luis Severino, Andrew Miller
Full Season: Masahiro
Tanaka
See above.
Honorable Mentions:
Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances
Most
Valuable Rookie:
2nd Half:
Luis Severino
Although it pretty much
crushed the Yankees hopes of winning the division and even winning a playoff
game for not trading Severino for David Price at the trade deadline, it looks
like it may in fact pay off in the long run. At only 21 years old, Severino
looks like he will be a key piece in the Yankees pitching staff for many years
to come.
Honorable Mentions:
Greg Bird, Rob Refsnyder
Full Season: Luis
Severino
Although he was only up
in the big leagues for a couple months, Severino was by far the most useful
rookie of the 2015 season. It is a strong case to go with Greg Bird who filled
in nicely when Teixeira went down with an injury, but I’ll go with Severino on
this one.
Honorable Mentions:
Greg Bird, Slade Heathcott
Anti-Most
Valuable Player:
2nd Half: Brett
Gardner
So things certainly
went downhill after the All Star break. After hitting .302 and earning his
first All Star selection, Gardner went on to be a whole different player in the
second half and hit only .210. Gardner has always been a career bad hitter
after the All Star break, but this season was by far the worst as Gardner’s
struggles were one of the reasons the Yankees did so poorly these last few
months.
Dishonorable Mentions:
Jacoby Ellsbury, Chase Headley, Chasen Shreve
Full Season: Stephen
Drew
As badly as we wanted
Stephen Drew off this team, Joe Girardi kept penciling him into the starting
lineup. For most of the season, Drew wasn’t even able to hit above .200, but
after a good week of hitting Drew was able to get above the Mendoza line and
keep it because of him being sidelined with dizziness. Although it’s pretty
hard to beat out a guy who was designated for assignment four different times
(Capuano), Drew was able to win this award pretty easily.
Dishonorable Mentions:
Chris Capuano, Chase Headley
