Report: Yankees and GM Brian Cashman agree to five-year extension
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, the Yankees and General Manager Brian Cashman are closing in on a brand new five-year $25 million contract extension, making him the highest paid GM in MLB history. The deal is not yet official, but a source close to the deal leaked the information out to Nightengale.
The reigning MLB GM of the year succeeded Bob Watson as the Yankees general manager in 1998 after serving as assistant GM in 1992. Cashman made quite a commotion in the Bronx last year when he convinced the Steinbrenners to sell at the trade deadline in 2016, shipping out the likes of Andrew Miller, Aroldis Chapman, Carlos Beltran, and Ivan Nova. The “rebuild” was very shortlived, as the Bombers, fueled by the upstart Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge pushed for a playoff spot in 2016, but came up just short.
Fast forward to today, the Yankees are coming off a season where they finished one game away from the World Series and have a young core of stars taking the league by storm. On top of that, Cashman made some more headlines in the news by electing to move on from longtime manager Joe Girardi, and instead, he hired former Yankee third baseman, Aaron Boone, to lead this team for at least the next three years.
Cashman has taken quite a bit of criticism from the fans and media over the years, but the talent on this roster shows that he knows what he is doing. This recent success gave the Steinbrenners more than enough to justify giving the longtime Yankee front office executive a two million dollar pay raise.
