Breaking: Yankees name Josh Bard their new bench coach
With
the managerial position taken care of, it was only a matter of time until the
rest of the Yankees coaching staff was filled in. The first new member of the
staff to join Aaron Boone will be the 39-year-old bullpen coach of the Los Angeles
Dodgers, Josh Bard.
Bard does not have any managing experience, which is a tad surprising since Boone also lacks experience. However, the Yankees believe Rothschild’s former managing experience could fill that role.
Bard
was a teammate of Aaron Boone with the Cleveland Indians and had a steady
career primarily as a backup catcher from 2002-2011. Bard will provide an
instant connection within the Yankees coaching staff and will also bring
experience from a team that just made it to the World Series.
Being
a catcher, he could be an integral mentor for Gary Sanchez.
More
than anything this hiring shows the Yankees are not afraid to take risks with
the coaching decisions and are applying the youth movement to both sides of the
game.
For what it is worth, Bard used to catch CC Sabathia on the Indians.
