Yankees injury news: Yankees place RHP Luis Cessa on 10-day DL, recall LHP Caleb Smith

After last night’s start, Luis Cessa has been placed on the 10-day DL with a ribcage injury. The corresponding move is calling up left-hander Caleb Smith, who was sent down in favor of Cessa earlier this week.

It’s been a disappointing season for Cessa, who was seen to be as a somewhat serviceable spot starter in 2016. Cessa hasn’t lasted more than five innings in any of his four starts this season after pitching 4.1 innings last night against the Mets, while allowing five hits and two runs and striking out five. In 36 innings on the season, Cessa is 0-3 with a 4.75 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, while striking out 30 and walking 17.

Smith has been back and forth between Scranton and the Bronx this season. He’s been phenomenal in Scranton, pitching to a record of 9-1 and 2.39 ERA in 17 starts. That earned him a trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game in the process. His time in New York has been different though, as he’s made three starts thus far, none of them making it out of the fourth inning. That lack of length is concerning as far as his upside as a starter, pitching just ten innings and allowing eight runs (7.20 ERA). With Tanaka, Sabathia, and now Cessa all currently on the DL, Smith will be a likely candidate to get one or two spot starts.
