Yankees acquire catcher Erik Kratz from Indians
The
Yankees struck a deal just before the August 31 waiver trade deadline after
they acquired Erik Kratz from the Indians for cash considerations. The trade is
in response to the Yankees preparing for a few games without Gary Sanchez and
Austin Romine due to the brawl in Detroit.
Initially,
Sanchez was to be suspended four-games for his sucker punch on Miguel Cabrera
during the altercation. Romine was suspended for two-games essentially for
defending himself, and both have elected to appeal.
Romine
could get out of his suspension, but it is unlikely Sanchez is not kept out for
a few games. The trade is necessary because Kyle Higashioka is currently on the
DL in AAA, and he is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster.
Kratz,
37, is hitting .270/.359/.472 (132 wRC+) with 13 homers in 326 Triple-A plate
appearances. He is a career .200 hitter with 24 homers in 225 career MLB games, so he will be nothing more than a
filler for a few games in the event that the team is without Sanchez and
Romine. For now, he will likely head to Triple-A Scranton.
