Yankees injury news: Greg Bird to be activated from DL
Following
Friday night's tough loss against Seattle, the Yankees announced that 1B/OF
Tyler Austin was being optioned to Triple-A Scranton. The corresponding move was
confirmed by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Al Pedrique that Greg Bird would
return to the Bronx, and could be in the lineup on Saturday.
Bird last appeared in a game on May 1 before an injured foot flared up from when he fouled a ball off it on the last game of Spring Training. That injury played a key role in Bird's 6-for-60 start to the season with just one homer and three RBIs.
Bird
has endured some setbacks in his long road back from his injury that decimated
his confidence.
However,
Bird has been on an absolute tear in his rehab stint regaining that confidence
at the plate. During his rehab stint, Bird went 11-for-26 (.423) with three
homers, six RBIs, two doubles, and four walks.
For
now, Bird should see regular appearances at first base and DH with Chase
Headley and Todd Frazier also rotating in and out at third, first, and DH. The
Yankees are hoping Bird can provide a spark like he did in 2015 when he was
called up.
