Bombers take advantage of shoddy Mariners five errors with 10-1 victory
The Bombers came into this game hoping to build on yesterdays victory to secure a series win going into the Cleveland series. Masahiro Tanaka came out for another day game, the starter has struggled in day games, sporting an 11 ERA in seven day game starts this year. With Boston getting shellacked by Baltimore the night before, the Yank's win put them only 3.5 games behind the division lead entering today’s game. It would be a sloppy and overall odd game, but the luck was on New York’s side, as impressive outings by Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ronald Torreyes, and Masahiro Tanaka would be enough to give the Yankees the win.
After a quick out for Tanaka, Aaron Hicks would let a ground ball get by him in left field, letting Yonder Alonso stretch a single into a double. On the next at bat, Robinson Cano would single on a soft fly ball that Hicks again couldn’t get to. Nelson Cruz would make the Yanks pay for their sloppy play, driving in Alonso on a line drive double to left field. Tanaka proceeded to retire the next two batters, and the Bombers trailed 1-0.
The Yankees answered quickly, Starlin Castro would double off the right field wall to start. Gary Sanchez would hit a hard line drive to left field where Ben Gamel would miss the ball, letting Sanchez stretch his single into a double. After an Aaron Judge walk, shortstop Didi Gregorius came to the plate and hit a short pop fly that Mariner's shortstop Jean dropped, loading the bases for Chase Headley. The sloppy play would continue as third baseman Kyle Seager would bobble the ball on the transfer, driving in another run. After a Todd Frazier strikeout, Ellsbury would line a ball to left field, scoring two, then after another error by the shortstop, Headley would score, and Jacoby would reach third. Torreyes then reached on an infield single, giving the Yankees a 6-1 lead. Hicks would fly out to end the inning, but after five errors, the Bombers looked primed to run away with this game.
Joe Girardi would get ejected in the top of the third inning when a challenge didn’t go New York's way. It was evident that Jason Segura veered off the base path into the throwing lane of Didi trying to make a double play off a Cano ground ball. This was Joe’s fifth ejection of the season, but he did have a reason to be angry, as it was a clear missed call. Luckily, Tanaka would strike out Nelson Cruz in the next at bat to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Torreyes got on base again with a two out single, continuing his impressive game. Hicks would also single, bringing up Castro, who would loop a one run single, extending the lead to six. Sanchez would ground out to end the inning, but the Bombers sat in the lead 7-1.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, a sac fly double play by Chase Headley would put the Yanks up 8-1. Sanchez was the one caught off guard trying to tag up and go to third, but the throw to home was cut off and the catcher was tagged out at second.
The scoring wouldn't stop there, with the bases loaded in the seventh, Greg Bird would pinch hit for Castro, and hit a hard ground ball down the first base line, scoring two.
Tanaka had a good outing, even though he let up a run in the first. The starter didn’t have his best stuff early, struggling with his splitter, but he was able to work through it, only allowing one run in seven innings. It may not always be pretty, but recently the righty has gotten it done, and that will be very crucial coming down the stretch.
The game may have been sloppy, but the Yankees offense put together a second straight productive game and hopefully will continue it going forward. It seems like the reinforcements of Greg Bird and Starlin Castro are giving the Bombers some more pop and versatility to the lineup. This could be huge in the next two series as they look to close the gap for the division lead. Another series win for the Bombers give them three in their last four, and now welcome the Cleveland Indians for a three game series. First pitch will be tomorrow 7:05 pm on YES and will feature a battle of the aces as Luis Severino will go up against Corey Kluber.
