2018 Pinstripe Preview: Jordan Montgomery
Next up for the Bronx Bomber Ball’s 2018 Pinstripe Preview
is Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery burst onto the scene out of nowhere to secure
the Yankees fifth rotational spot after Spring Training. A 2014 fourth-round
draft pick out of the University of South Carolina, Montgomery showed the Yankees in a short time, that he had what it takes to be a quality starting pitcher in the majors.

2017 Review
Montgomery was not even on the radar for a starting spot coming into the Yankees 2017 Spring Training. The fifth rotational spot was thought by some to be a battle between Chad Green, Adam Warren, Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa. Not only did he swoop in and take the fifth spot by storm, but he thrived in his role last season. He went 9-7 with a respectable 3.88 ERA, striking out 144 and only giving up 51 walks in 155 1/3 innings.
Had it not been for his precautionary innings limit, we may have seen an even more impressive stat line. Montgomery showed poise and command of his four pitches that caught hitters off guard coming from the same arm slot. He never seemed to be rattled on the mound, even when he had the occasional bad outing. He would come back out his next start and do his job, like the last one never happened.
2018 Preview
While everyone fears the dreaded “sophomore slump”, I don’t see
this being a factor for Montgomery. He didn’t show much wear down the stretch,
and hitters didn’t seem to adjust to him or figure him out like they may some
rookies. His large lefty frame to go alongside his four-pitch arsenal and same
arm slot make him a force to be reckoned with. He is currently penciled in as
the fourth or fifth starter. Gumby will aim to build on his rookie season and cement
himself as one of the Yankees reliable arms for years to come.
