2018 Pinstripe Preview: Thairo Estrada

In a recent unfortunate turn of events, Yankees #10 prospect Thairo Estrada was shot in the hip during an attempted robbery. He spent three days in the hospital, but has been released and is recovering now. The bullet is still lodged in his hip, however, and there are no plans to remove it in the near future. Estrada is supposed to fully recover and play in 2018, so that is good news for a young prospect who just might be on the doorstep of his first major league call-up. A breakout prospect who can play three infield positions and was recently added to the Yankees’ 40-man roster this offseason is a great candidate as a September call-up at the least.

2017 Overview
Estrada has always been a solid prospect, but 2017 was a major breakout year for the 21 year-old. He spent the entire year with AA Trenton, and put up a slash line of .301/.353/.392, with six homers, 48 RBIs, 72 runs, eight stolen bases, and just a 10.3% strikeout rate in 542 plate appearances (122 games played). Estrada made history in the AA playoffs as well, hitting for the cycle against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. It was the third cycle in Trenton history, and the first in their postseason history. He also played 20 games in the Arizona Fall League, with a line of .342/.381/.430, with one homer, ten RBIs, three stolen bases, two doubles, and a triple in 84 plate appearances.  In a nutshell, Estrada had an incredibly successful 2017 season, and his future looks very bright.

2018 Preview
Now on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, Estrada quite possibly could make his major league debut in 2018. Even after his gunshot injury, he is expected to play the majority of the 2018 season for either AA or AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with Trenton being the most likely option. If he starts in Trenton, it would only be a matter of time before he is bumped up to AAA. However, barring injuries or trades, he could be blocked from a spot on the 2018 Yankees, even with his versatility. Didi Gregorius is entrenched as the Yankees’ shortstop, and with infield prospects such as Miguel Andujar, Gleyber Torres, and Tyler Wade all vying for playing time, Estrada may not have a spot on the roster. However, because he is such a versatile player, he has the skills to force a call-up if the time comes.
