2018 Pinstripe Preview: Domingo German
In recent years, pitching has been a strength for the New York
Yankees. They have a deep bullpen, and they have a lot of young and talented
prospects in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Domingo German, the 25-year-old pitcher
from the Dominican Republic was traded to the New York Yankees in the deal that
sent David Phelps to the Miami Marlins. He is a solid right-handed pitcher who
had some experience on Joe Girardi’s team last year when pitchers hit the
disabled list. This year, nothing is certain, as Aaron Boone comes to the Bronx
and is looking to pick the Evil Empire right where it left off last season.
This year, will German pitch as many innings as he hopes to pitch?
2017 Review
Last year, German spent most of his time in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,
but also saw some time in Trenton, and in the Bronx. He finished with an ERA of
2.88 between Double-A and Triple-A, an impressive number for a pitcher coming
off of Tommy John Surgery in 2015. He impressed the Yanks so much, they called
him up to play in seven games. Even though the seven games he pitched in were
mainly due to the fact that they were up by several runs, he continued to pitch
well at the big stage. His two biggest games were June 17th and September 20th,
when he fanned down six batters against the Oakland Athletics, and struck out four
in a late season matchup against the Minnesota Twins. He had a total ERA of
3.14 in 14.1 innings pitched in his big league stint.
2018 Preview
It’s tough to say that German will get a ton of playing time this
year with the Yankees. Yes, he can consistently pitch 93-95 MPH as a starter,
but he will most likely have to beat out pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Chad
Green, two contenders for the fifth starting pitcher. He has a plus fastball
and a slurve, which many pitchers do not have. The key for Domingo German this
year is to have another consistent year in Scranton. This will be his third
year off Tommy John, so staying healthy is also a key. He will be an X-Factor for
the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team, and when the time comes, I have no doubt in my
mind he will be called up to the Bronx. If the Yankees meet these high
expectations that are set for them and they win a lot of games going into
August, he will come up and pitch some solid innings out of the bullpen to give
the guys some rest, maybe even a start. 2018 will be a big year for Domingo
German, and I believe he will step up in a big way.
