MLB Free Agency: Yankees still in contact with Mike Moustakas

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported today on Twitter that the Yankees may not be done making splashes in free agency, as they are still in contact with former Royals' third baseman Mike Moustakas. The Yankees are currently fine going into the season with rookie Miguel Andujar at third base, but it seems that they are at least open to adding another slugger to their already stellar lineup.

The lefty power hitter seems like a perfect fit for the short porch at Yankee Stadium and could fill the open spot at third base. However, the Yankees are bullish on getting under the luxury cap as soon as possible, and with the recent blockbuster trade of Giancarlo Stanton its tough to see how another big contract fits. It looks that the slow free agency this year may have opened the door for Moustakas to sign a short-term deal in the Bronx. This would benefit both parties as if Moustakas has a great 2018 he could cash in on a multi-year deal somewhere else, and the Yankees can stay under the luxury tax if they so please.

This would certainly be a big catch for the Bombers as a hitter like Moustakas could help the Yanks create a second “Murderers Row” type lineup. Until any serious negotiations start, this report should just be viewed as Cashman doing his due diligence as the hot stove heats up.
