Yankees win marathon 18-inning game to sweep Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball

The New York Yankees completed the sweep of the Chicago Cubs 5-4 after an epic, record-setting, 18 inning game. The contest set a major league record for most strikeouts in a single game as both teams fell into a run-scoring drought for nearly nine extra innings. It was in the top of the 18th that Aaron Hicks was pushed across the plate to give the Yankees the lead on Starlin Castro’s groundout into a fielder's choice. All of this after Aroldis Chapman surrendered a three run lead in the bottom of the 9th inning.

The Yankees led for most of the game, going ahead in the first inning on a RBI groundout by Castro. The Cubs tied it with a home run by Javier Baez after fouling a ball off of his left foot in the third inning. The game remained tied until the seventh inning when Aaron Judge broke open the scoring with a key RBI triple to put the Yankees ahead 2-1. Jacoby Ellsbury would add to the lead with a two-run home run the eighth.

It seemed as if the Yankees were well on their way to a victory in the bottom of the ninth inning as Aroldis Chapman took the mound. However, the star closer didn’t have his control as he threw a myriad of pitches, giving up key hits to Javier Baez and Albert Almora Jr. before finally surrendering the lead by hitting Anthony Rizzo with the bases loaded to force in the tying run.

All of this overshadows a strong performance by Luis Severino who only allowed one run over seven innings. Jon Lester as well had a strong outing with two runs over seven innings. The bullpens took over allowing only three runs for the remainder of eleven innings of play.

Hicks started the top of the 18th inning with a bunt single. After the ball was thrown away by Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras, Hicks was able to advance to second on the error. Ronald Torreyes would then bunt Hicks to third before Castro grounded into a fielder’s choice which scored Hicks who was aggressively running home all the way with the infield in. Chasen Shreve finished the final three innings allowing just one hit, with three walks and five strikeouts.

The win gives the Yankees their fifth straight win, keeping them a half game up on Baltimore in the American League East. After literally playing two games worth of innings, the team will have to travel to Cincinnati to start a set against the Reds on Monday night. They will face their former prospect Rookie Davis in the first game of the series.
