Yankees stumble in 5-3 loss to Reds

After the Yankees epic bout with the World Champion Cubs on Sunday night, they had every right to come out flat in Monday’s opener against Reds. However, as this team has done all season long they found a way to win. Masahiro Tanaka did not have his best stuff, but he found ways to work out of potential trouble all night. Starting off with three runs in the first inning, the Yankees never looked back and were able to win their sixth game in a row behind ten runs from the Bomber offense.

 Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark the Yankees had the struggling C.C. Sabathia (2-1, 5.45 ERA) take the hill. After starting the season strong, Sabathia has wavered as of late. Having failed to pitch past the sixth inning since April 15, the Yankees were looking for innings, and command. While Sabathia is obviously getting older, his veteran presence in the rotation is valuable to all of the young pitchers, as he has seen it all and won a championship. The Bombers have made a habit of getting on the board early and that continued tonight. Gary Sanchez hit his first home run since coming off the disabled list, in the top of the first inning, and Didi Gregorius followed that up with a home run of his own to right field in the top of the second inning. With a two-run advantage, all Sabathia had to do was give the Yankees some length, and let the potent offense do the rest. Unfortunately, the former ace would allow five runs to score during that second inning. Scott Schebler and Jose Peraza were brought in on a deflected single to left field.  Joey Votto singled on a ball to right field that brought in Devin Mesoraco and the speedy Billy Hamilton. Sabathia would only allow one final run during the inning, a single on a sharp ground ball by Adam Duvall that made the score 5-2 after just two innings. The damage had been done, and it was not the start the bombers had hoped for.

When your team is rolling, and winning like the Yankees have been you want to keep that line moving, and keep the wins coming. You never want to be that one guy that lets the team down, and basically halts the party but that is the situation Sabathia was in tonight. The Yankees would score one more run during the fourth inning, on a line drive to right field that brought in the surging Starlin Castro in to score. After four, the Reds held their lead, 5-3.

Sabathia did settle down after that awful second inning, and gave the Yankees a six inning start. But the Yankees were just unable to mount a comeback tonight, and add to their nine come from behind wins. Dellin Betances would come in to pitch during the seventh inning walking the first two batters of the inning, but worked out of trouble.

Some nights in baseball it is just not meant to be. While the Yankees attempted to work a rally, this night belonged to the Reds. Aaron Judge was able to reach base on a broken bat single to right field in the top of the eighth, but that is where he stayed. During the top of the ninth inning Aaron Hicks and Matt Holliday both worked walks, but Sanchez hit a hard liner to third base that turned into a game ending double play.

Tomorrow is an off day for the Yankees, as they travel back home and prepare for all the festivities of retiring Derek Jeters number on Sunday night. The Bombers will get back into action on Thursday night 7:05 PM ET against the first-place Houston Astros. Michael Pineda (3-1, 3.12 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Bombers, looking to continue his solid start to the season. For the Astros, left hander Dallas Keuchel (5-0, 1.88 ERA) is scheduled to get the start. Keuchel is having a stellar season so far, and looks to keep his record unscathed against the Yankees.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
