Gardner and Holliday slug two homers each as Yankees beat Orioles 8-3
The New York Yankees knew that their upcoming road trip would be a true testament. A trip that would tell the team, and the fans just where they stand, as the dog days of summer lurk. Camden yards has not always been kind to the Bombers, especially in the last two seasons. Monday afternoon in Baltimore, the Yankees found themselves struggling once again. Their offense, which has been inconsistent to say the least, was unable to get things going and that led to the Orioles taking game one by a score of 3-2. As a whole, pitching for the Yankees has been surprisingly good, and in order to come out of this A.L. East road trip with their spot in first place, the Bombers need their offense to get rolling once again.
Tuesday night in Baltimore, the Yankees had arguably their best pitcher taking the hill in Luis Severino (3-2, 3.11 ERA). Severino was brilliant in his last start against the Kansas City Royals, where he pitched eight innings of shutout ball. Luckily for him, and the Yankee fan base the Bomber offense showed up giving Severino plenty of run support. Chris Tillman (1-1, 4.43 ERA) was on the hill for the Orioles, and he was not able to make it through the third inning as the Yankee bats came out on fire.

Severino was brilliant in his last start against the Kansas City Royals, where he pitched eight innings of shutout ball. Luckily for him, and the Yankee fan base the Bomber offense showed up giving Severino plenty of run support. Chris Tillman (1-1, 4.43 ERA) was on the hill for the Orioles, and he was not able to make it through the third inning as the Yankee bats came out on fire.
During the top of the first inning, Brett Gardner got things started with a homerun to right center field that put the Yankees on the board 1-0. Matt Holliday, decided he wanted to go deep as well and hit a solo shot to left center field, that gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. The third inning, is where the Bombers started to get the train going. Aaron Hicks singled on a line drive to center field, which brought in the hustling Didi Gregorius, and Holliday hit his second home run, on a fly ball to left center field which gave the Yankees a 4-0 lead. The new look Chase Headley showed a couple of days off is just what he needed, as he singled on a sharp ground ball to right field that brought in big Aaron Judge to put the Yankees in great position, up 5-0 after three.
Not to be outdone, Gardner hit a line drive home run to right center field, his second of the game to make it 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Aaron Judge continues to prove that he is not just home run or bust, as he doubled on a sharp line drive to right field bringing in Gary Sanchez, and Starlin Castro. After only four innings the Bombers had what would be an insurmountable 8-0 lead after four.

We can all say that Severino may be the beneficiary on amazing run support, but he was cruising through the dangerous Oriole lineup all night long. During the sixth inning however, after three soft hit, infield singles Severino gave up his lone run on a ground ball to short by Trey Mancini. Able to get out of a bases loaded jam, the Yankees remained on top 8-1 at the end of the sixth inning.

As Severino was forced to exit the game after 100 pitches during the seventh inning, the Yankees bullpen was able to get eight outs, and ultimately the win. Bryan Mitchell did run into some trouble during the eighth inning, Mark Trumbo reached on a throwing error by Mitchell, followed by a walk and single by Joey Rickard making it 8-2. J.J. Hardy hit a hanging slider to right field that ended Mitchell's night, scoring Mancini making it 8-3. A great offensive showing paid off for the Bombers tonight as they got the win, and the Yankees will look to continue that success as their road trip progresses.
Tomorrow night 7:05 PM ET, the Bombers look to take the series from Baltimore as Masahiro Tanaka (5-4, 5.86 ERA) takes the mound looking to follow up on his career best, 13 strikeout performance. For the Orioles, Kevin Gausman (2-4, 6.17 ERA) will get the ball, looking to follow up on his last start in which he only gave up two runs over six and two thirds innings.
