Yankees bats silenced for second game in a row in 5-1 loss to Astros

Coming off a tough loss in which Jake Marisnick of the Astros threw Jacoby Ellsbury out at the plate to end the game, the Yankees looked to right the ship in game two of a four game extended weekend set with Houston. Going up against a young and talented arm in Lance McCullers Jr., the Yankees were going to need to come out early in order to have a chance. Unfortunately, McCullers dominated the Yankees as they were shut down in a 5-1 loss.

The Yankees sent Jordan Montgomery to the mound to face a tough Astros lineup. Despite allowing two singles, Montgomery was able to escape the inning unscathed. Montgomery would hold the Astros scoreless until the former Yankee Brian McCann took him deep with a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. The Astros also picked up their fourth run off Montgomery on a Carlos Correa single scoring George Springer as Correa continued his hot hitting in the Bronx.

Jonathan Holder relived Gumby in the seventh inning and pitched a perfect inning. Tyler Clippard came on for the eighth and walked one, but ended up striking out the side.

The Yankees brought in Aroldis Chapman for the ninth inning to get some extra work in, and he struggled again, recording just two outs, while allowing three hits and an earned run. Giovanny Gallegos made his Major League debut in the ninth inning and recorded one out getting Correa to fly out to center field.

Didi Gregorius picked up the lone RBI of the night on an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning with two strikes. The team showed some life, but their rally was too little, too lat

The Yankees were unable to get the bats going against McCullers who allowed just four hits and no walks while picking up seven strikeouts over six innings. Aaron Judge was the lone bright spot going 2-for-3 with a double off the wall. On the other hand, Gary Sanchez looked overmatched tonight going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

The Yankees will look to heat up tomorrow against Mike Fiers who has a 5.64 ERA in six starts. The Yankees will send Luis Severino (2-2, 3.40 ERA) to the bump as he looks to build upon his promising start to the season.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
