Tanaka allows seven earned runs in Yankees 10-4 loss

Coming off a solid 8-3 win and tying up the series in game two against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees looked to take game three of a three game set tonight at Camden Yards. Unfortunately, Masahiro Tanaka struggled once again in a 10-4 loss.

In the top of the first the Yankees managed to load bases with walks from Aaron Judge and Matt Holliday to go along with a Starlin Castro single, but wasted that opportunity with an inning ending groundout by Chase Headley.

The second inning was quiet for both teams, but in the bottom of the third the Orioles’ bats sparked. Tanaka quickly fell apart as the Orioles’ offense collected four runs on five hits. Adam Jones hit an RBI double, scoring J.J. Hardy and the O’s took the lead 1-0. Minutes after, Mark Trumbo sailed a ball over Judge’s head in right field for a two-RBI double, followed by an RBI single by Chris Davis to make the score 4-0 Orioles.

The Yankees put a run on the board in the top of the fourth when the ball reached the stands on a throwing error by Jonathan Schoop, and allowed Judge to score making it a 4-1 game. Tanaka and the Yankees’ defense couldn’t hold the O’s hot bats in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, J.J. Hardy doubled. And soon after, Adam Jones hit a three run HR and the Orioles extend their lead 7-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Bombers’ bats come alive once again as Rob Refsnyder led off the inning with a single. After Gardner grounded into a fielder’s choice, Hicks hit an RBI double that scored Gardner all the way from first base. Holliday also contributed an RBI single that scored Hicks, and made the game 7-3 O’s. However, the bases were left loaded as Ronald Torreyes hit a groundout to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, after Refsnyder doubled and Gardner walked, Mychal Givens relieved Kevin Gausman who walked five batters through 5 1/3 innings of work. But the Yankees RISP struggles continued as two runners were left on base for as Matt Holliday flied out to end the top of the sixth.

The Orioles would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two-run home run from Chris Davis off Giovanny Gallegos.

Darren O’Day came in to relieve Givens in the top of the eighth. Refsnyder and Romine both singled, and Gardy scored Refsnyder via a groundout. With Refsnyder scoring, the Orioles still led 9-4, and they weren’t done scoring just yet. In the bottom of the eighth Seth Smith singled home the 10th Orioles run of the night.

The Yankees failed to make anything happen in the ninth and went down by a final score of 10-4. They lost two of three to the Orioles and will look to get back on track with a four-game long weekend series in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
