BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #12: Albert Abreu
At
just 21-years young, Albert Abreu has a lot of baseball ahead of him. Abreu was
one of the primary pieces the Yankees acquired from the Astros in the Brian
McCann deal, and for good reason. Abreu is a four-pitch thrower, which is what
we should classify him as more than a pitcher at this stage in his career.
Abreu’s
heater is what impresses the most, as we’ve seen it touch 99 on the radar gun.
His inconsistencies lie with his other pitches, but his stuff is so good at
times, you see why he’s a fringe top-10 prospect in the deepest farm in all of
professional baseball.
Abreu
had a decent 2016 campaign between Class-A and High-A. He appeared in 24 games
– 16 starts – between the two teams, posting a 3.72 ERA while punching out 115
batters in 101.2 innings. His biggest deficiency was his control, walking 58
opponents in the aforementioned 101.2 innings.
Projection:
Abreu
has a long way to go before we see anywhere near a big league roster, but 2017
is a huge year for his progression. We could Abreu pitch at three different
levels in ’17 depending if he starts at High-A or Double-A.
Abreu’s
main focus needs to be his secondary stuff. If that develops, he can blossom
into a star, and maybe even crack the Yankees top-5 prospects headed into 2018.
My guess is that he peaks at Double-A and spends most of his time there. The
scouts seem to think Abreu has the potential to be a front-line starter in a
big league rotation and seeing how his repertoire is lead by a fastball that
sits a cool 93-97 MPH, I tend to agree.
