BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #9: Domingo Acevedo

Image
As we get deeper and deeper into our organizational rankings, we get to guys who have the best chance at being something special. When you can hit 103 on a radar gun like Domingo Acevedo can, that screams special. We could be seeing this 22-year old a lot sooner than we expect. Photo Credit: Mark LoMoglio/Tampa Yankees

BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #12: Albert Abreu

Image
At just 21-years young, Albert Abreu has a lot of baseball ahead of him. Abreu was one of the primary pieces the Yankees acquired from the Astros in the Brian McCann deal, and for good reason. Abreu is a four-pitch thrower, which is what we should classify him as more than a pitcher at this stage in his career.   Photo Credit: Jayne Hansen

Pinstripe Preview: Domingo German

Image
It’s 2017, Domingo German is 24-years old, and he’s yet to pitch in Double-A. He has had success during his minor league career thus far, but 2017 is likely the season that is going to make or break this young man's professional career. The Yankees are still stretching him out like a starter, but his best path to the show could be as a long-reliever. Photo Credit: USA TODAY/Sports Images

Pinstripe Preview: Giovanny Gallegos

Image
After a rough start to his professional career from 2012-2014, something clicked for Giovanny Gallegos. He’s posted a sub-2 ERA in both of his last two seasons, which include 27 games at Triple-A. Gallegos, now 25, is in fact on the Yankees 40-man roster and could be someone to keep your eye on during spring training that could potentially win a spot in the Yankees bullpen. BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #21: Jordan Montgomery

Image
Each year as Spring Training creeps up on us, we wonder whom the dark horses are to make the 25-man roster and even contribute at a high level. Well, now that we’ve arrived at our 21 st  rated prospect, I personally think Jordan Montgomery could be that guy. If you’ve taken any notes over the past couple seasons, especially 2016, you’d recognize somebody whose become a complete pitcher. A pitcher that might be ready to make an impact if given the opportunity.   Photo Credit: Cheryl Pursell | Pinstriped Prospects

BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #26: Dietrich Enns

Image
When we discuss the Yankees farm system, we usually mention the obvious names in Jorge Mateo, Blake Rutherford, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres amongst others and for good reason. That being said, the bottom half of our top-30 list is full of guys who can be big time Major League contributors down the line. And not just down the line, but right now. Dietrich Enns fits that mold. Photo Credit: Jason Farmer | Times-Shamrock Breakdown Enns was a 19th round draft pick back in 2012 and has had success at every level he’s pitched at. Enns isn’t a big strikeout guy and relies on his defense to play sound behind him. He struck out just 124 batters across 135 innings in 2016 and just 55 batters went down via the strikeout in 58.2 ’15 innings. In 344.1 career minor league innings, Enns has posted an impressive 1.86 ERA while recording a 1.10 WHIP. Enns really put himself on the map when he dominated at Triple-A last season.   In 14 games at Triple-A alone, 10 starts, Enns yield...

BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #29: Nick Solak

Image
The Yankees 2016 draft was all about first-round pick Blake Rutherford and to be honest, the hype behind him is completely warranted. That being said, the team selected a very nice player in the second-round out of a Louisville by the name of Nick Solak. Solak checks in as our 29 th  ranked prospect and would likely be higher if the Yankees' system wasn’t one of the deeper ones in all of the game. Photo Credit: Robert M. The state of the New York Yankees rotation

Image
As we sit here in November, the New York Yankees have to be one of the more fascinating teams to keep an eye on. They have oodles of young talent on the cusp of breaking into the majors, some that have already arrived. But most of the recognizable young names in the organization are position players. And although the casual fan is more enamored with how many home runs a player hit, pitching wins games. Let’s take a look at the Yankees rotation and how it breaks down and what they can do to improve it. The Yankees have a lot of good, young talent that could potentially win a rotation spot but they’re missing a few components. The main cog they need is a left-hander. Not just any average lefty, we have that with CC Sabathia. We need a young southpaw that will alleviate some pressure off of Masahiro Tanaka so he doesn’t have to be perfect every time out. All of our young arms are good, but they’re all right-handers that throw hard and have some form of breaking stuff. Nobody wants to...

CC stifles Dodgers offense in 3-0 victory

Image
The Yankees came into action on Tuesday in dire need of a win. They had lost two consecutive contests and needed a big performance from CC Sabathia in hopes that they’d head into Wednesday’s clash with Clayton Kershaw tied at one in the series. Series wins are a necessity at this juncture in the season and the big lefty had to  shut down the Dodgers offense. From the first pitch of the game you could tell CC was bringing his A-plus stuff to the table. He had all of his pitches working and we even saw a few fastballs touch 93 MPH like it was 2012 all over again. Despite all that, CC got in trouble right off the bat after walking Howie Kendrick to leadoff the game. Kendrick advanced to second and then to third on two groundballs but handed his helmet to the third base coach after Yasiel Puig went down swinging. He followed suit in inning number two allowing Kike Hernandez to third, but got another big strikeout to escape trouble again. The Yankees offense was quiet until the...

A look at the Yankees rotation come 2017

Image
I know I may be getting ahead of myself here, but like many of you, I’m just simply excited for the future. That includes our pitching staff. Now I won’t delve into the bullpen because other than Dellin Betances, Tyler Clippard and Adam Warren, who knows what the rest of it will look like. I would, however, like to take a look at the rotation and how it may shape out and what options the Yankees have. Photo Credit: Anthony Gruppuso, USA TODAY Sports

Despite another three home runs, Yankees falter in rubber match

Image
Heading into Wednesday’s game, the Yankees likely didn’t feel too good about themselves after blowing a 6-0 lead just last night. Even after that, the Yankees had a chance to win the series if they got a good start from CC Sabathia and the offense rallied behind him. A series victory would finally end the Blue Jays streak of four straight series wins at Yankee Stadium. Photo Credit: Seth Wenig | AP

BBB Podcast #12: Nathan Eovaldi injury, Alex Rodriguez retirement, and the youth movement

Image
In this podcast, BBB writers Steven Eareckson and James Grande discuss a plethora of Yankee-related concerns. Beginning with their takes on the ceremonial sendoff of Alex Rodriguez, and the events leading up to it, and concluding with their opinions on the Yankees recent youth movement, Steven and James touch upon a number of issues on the minds of Yankees fans. Though the two may not have agreed on much in the past when it comes to the Yankees, Steven and James surprisingly found some common ground on the current state of the ball club.

Bullpen implodes as Yankees blow six run lead

Image
The Yankees came into Tuesday’s bout with the Blue Jays on a bit of a roll, winning five of their last six games. The Yankees unfortunately were facing off against one of the best pitchers in the American League this year in Marco Estrada. In two previous starts against the Yankees this season, Estrada was lights out. He allowed just three runs over 15 innings while striking out eight, which was good enough for a 1.80 ERA. Don't give up on Luis Severino just yet

Image
Like is often the case, 21 and 22-year old pitchers don’t always see results when they’re first called up to the Major Leagues. Whether it’s lack of secondary stuff or they’re simply nervous, every pitcher goes through a period of time where nothing seems to be working. As us Yankees fans have seen all year, Luis Severino has seemingly lost all confidence in himself and hasn’t put together a complete start during his entire 2016 campaign. That said, we’re not even close to the time we should give up on him as a starting pitcher. Photo Credit: Ray Stubblebine

Nathan Eovaldi blows up in fifth inning in Yankees 4-1 loss to Mets

Image
Thursday’s game marked the end of the 2016 Subway Series and Nathan Eovaldi took the hill looking for the 3-1 series win. Eovaldi had come into Thursday’s game on a bit of a roll, pitching well in all three of his starts since returning to the rotation. With a win, the Yankees and the Mets would both be 55-53, which is interesting as one team sold at the deadline while the other were considered buyers. However, the Yankees offense struggled mightily to hit with runners in scoring position as they dropped the series finale to spit the Subway Series at two games apiece. BBB writers on the Yankees trade deadline moves

Image
Clint Frazier Photo Credit: Cheryl Pursell | Pinstriped Prospects Trade deadline sellers for the first time in over 25 years, the New York Yankees made an abundance of trades in an attempt for a rebuild of some sort. Although the Yankees will remain competitive, the moves made were clearly in the interest of the team in the long term as opposed to this year's team. First, they went out and dealt Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for four players including Gleyber Torres and Adam Warren. The Yankees next move was trading Andrew Miller to the Indians for four prospects including Clint Frazier. Then, the team acquired Tyler Clippard from the Diamondbacks to fortify the bullpen for the time being. But the Yankees weren't done there. On the day of the trade deadline, the Yankees traded Carlos Beltran to the Rangers for three prospects, and they got rid of Ivan Nova for two players to be named later from the Pirates. Now, hear from our very own writer's with their thoughts on the ...

Ivan Nova's stellar start leads Yankees to 2-1 victory over Orioles

Image
The Yankees opened their four-game series with the division leading  Baltimore Orioles on Monday and they sent Ivan Nova to the hill. Nova  came into Monday’s contest hanging onto his rotation spot by a thread.  If the Yankees want to make a playoff push, it’s necessary that they  win a minimum of three games this series. They got off on the right foot on Monday winning a tightly contest matchup by a score of 2-1. Photo Credit: Al Bello | Getty Images

Trading Chapman is a no-brainer, but resigning him this offseason? Consider it

Image
Very rarely is a player dealt at the trade deadline and back with the team that traded him the following year. Once a team gets rid of that player, fan bases and organizations begin to move on, cheering for the new player(s) they’ve acquired for the aforementioned recently traded player. If you’re the New York Yankees, Aroldis Chapman must be dealt by August 1 st . That said; why not strongly consider resigning him during the upcoming free agency? Photo Credit: Elsa | Getty Images

Midseason Update: Yankees top 30 prospects

Image
This season, our prospect team consisting of five people ranked the top 40 prospects in the organization based on tools (skill set), player performance, and individual research. The five of us then collaborated, and the rankings were averaged out to form a consensus top 30 prospect list in the Yankees organization. We did the list during the preseason and wrote features on each of the top 30 prospects , as well as paragraphs about the 10 honorable mentions . Although we will not be doing midseason features on these players, the comprehensive list is below. We look forward to re-ranking the top 30 after the season, and again in February of 2017 which will include the player features and breakdowns. Photo Via CBS Sports

Teixeira homers for the first time since April 13, Yankees lose series finale 7-1

Image
You would think turning around a 98 MPH fastball doesn't happen very often, but that means you haven’t seen Nathan Eovaldi (6-5, 5.19 ERA) pitch. Danny Santana got the scoring party started with a laser beam that just got over the right field wall in the third inning and the Twins didn’t look back from there. Eovaldi’s consistent inconsistencies bit him him once again as he allowed four homers on Sunday, including back-to-back-to-back jacks to Brian Dozier, Trevor Plouffe and Max Kepler in the sixth inning. Eovaldi has now allowed four or more runs in five consecutive starts. The 26-year old right-hander threw pitch after pitch right down the heart of the plate.
