Pinstripe Preview: Domingo German
It’s
2017, Domingo German is 24-years old, and he’s yet to pitch in Double-A. He has
had success during his minor league career thus far, but 2017 is likely the
season that is going to make or break this young man's professional career. The
Yankees are still stretching him out like a starter, but his best path to the
show could be as a long-reliever.
2016
review:
German
pitched 10 games between Tampa and Charleston last season and was simply there.
He posted a 3.08 ERA over 49.2 innings while striking out just 38. German
continues to have plenty of injury issues, which has held back his progress.
After missing all of 2015 thanks to good old Tommy John, German missed time
during the ’16 campaign with more discomfort in his elbow.
2017
outlook:
First
and foremost, German needs to stay healthy. He’s only been able to start more
than 13 games once in his career and he’s been in professional baseball since
he was 17. German will most likely start
at Double-A and will need to show something if he wants to rise through the
ranks so to speak.
As
I mentioned in my intro, German could be someone that may need to transition
into a reliever if he wants to make the majors. He could show real value as a
multi-inning guy who just airs it out and doesn’t see lineups more than once.
It also would help the wear and tear on his already fragile elbow. There hasn’t
been any talk of this, but it’s just something we should keep our eyes on.
We
should limit our expectations, however, because he’s a walking injury like we
mentioned. He’ll likely max out at Triple-A barring everything goes well with
the Double-A club. If he can ever get back to where he was early in his
professional career when he was with the Miami Marlins, he could be a force to be
reckoned with.
