BBB 2017 Top Prospect Countdown #16: Chad Green

After being acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the Justin Wilson deal at the Winter Meetings in 2015, Chad Green played his first year with the Yankees last season. As a 6'3" right-hander with good stuff, Green dominated in Triple-A, forcing his way to the big leagues for spot starts and appearances out of the bullpen. Green comes into this spring as one of four or five guys competing for the final two spots in the rotation, and wth a good spring, Green could start the year in the rotation, thus graduating off this prospect list early.

Breakdown
The University of Louisville product was drafted in the 11th round of the 2013 draft by the Detroit Tigers. After three inconsistent seasons with the organization, the Tigers shipped him and Luis Cessa to New York for Justin Wilson. Green showed yet again why Brian Cashman has been fleecing teams with trades over the past two seasons with a very productive season in 2016.

Green was called up to make his major league debut on May 16 getting a start in Arizona. Despite being roughed up in his first career outing and being sent back down, Green showed promising stuff and was ultimately called back up once again about a month later. Green’s best start of the season came in the Bronx on August 15th where he pitched six innings allowing just two hits, no runs, 11 strikeouts, and no walks. Green ended up going 2-4 with a 4.73 ERA in 12 games including 8 starts in the bigs, but he dominated Triple-A going 7-6 with a 1.52 ERA in 16 starts. He also struck out 10.2 batters per nine innings pitched at the big league level which is much improved over his 8.6 K/9 career average.

Projection
Overall, Green looks to be a back-end rotation starter over the course of his career. As a player with a good physical tool-set to go along with a solid skill set, Green could continue developing into a mid-line rotation starter. The Yankees would love to have Green contributing at the Major League level in 2017 whether in the rotation or out of the bullpen. He’s one of the more interesting guys to keep an eye on this spring as he certainly has a shot at making the rotation to open the season. Realistically, look for Green to start the season in Triple-A, but he is likely the first man up if the Yankees need a spot start or someone to fill in for an injury.
